Got a radeon 9800 pro and running on the new 4.1's, and in games like cs and sometimes raven shield the fps dips to the 30's!. I was playing cs today and at one point my fps was at 28-35. Anyone have an idea as to what i can do to fix it?

I tried vsync off and on - no go
16bit and 32bit color - no go
truform (just to make sure) - no go
resolution was @ 1280x960 full detail.

system:
2000+
PNY 512 pc2100
ATI 9800 Pro
POS SiS board @ only 4x AGP

Could my system be bottlenecking? Please offer some help.

Yeaha,

Yer ram is kinda bottlenecking but 1700+ is enough for CS. Reinstall CS and try reformating? I use 640x480 with a 9700pro (just got a 9800pro) and havent played cs yet with it, but I get 100 fps constant, 90 lowest.

So try,

Reformating
Reinstalling CS
Someone elses cs config (www.eg.phlop.com grab bloodshots config, just for test purposes)

hope u fix it

Sometimes USB devices like printers or sync cradles for PDAs can spike in page file use. I've found this to be the case for me, so I just pull my iPaq out of the cradle any time I play games now. In my experience it has fixed the problem.

This may be your problem but its just my $0.02

I'd say scrap the 4.1 Cats in favour of the 3.10 Cats (or better yet, the 3.9 Cats). The 4.1 Cats are slower than either the 3.9 or the 3.10 Cats, on the whole.

Umm.....its kinda hard NOT to get 100 constant at only 640x480
God....how can you play on that resolution? Thats inhumane. 800x600 should be the bare minimum for a resolution :p

over excessive. Reformatting is a LAST DITCH effort and I really doubt it will help

First, type in
max_fps 100
in your console

Also try taking off some of the AA/AF, possibly back down to 2/4xaa/8xaf and also try @ resolution 1024x768

then if nothing changes, try reinstalling CS

I get 100FPS (1280x960) and it never moves :)

As for your problem, not sure.

I have AA and AF both on Application Preference.

RAM maybe? but I remember getting 100FPS out of my Duron 600 with a GF2 MX 32mb @ 1024x768..

negatory chief

I am getting constant 100s with my system (xp1800, 640mb pc2100, 9800pro) @ 1024x768 with full AA and AF.

right now, I think it could just be some fubared setting he has over looked, or his motherboard. Damn sis gets ya everytime :)

Wow. you all forget easy...

HL/CS have had issues with ATi cards since day 1. They have never gotten around to fixing them, since it is hard to reproduce. On some ATi cards, it just performs VERY poorly.

You all also forget that when HL came out, that a PII-300 was high end, with a TNT2 card. ANYTHING over 1ghz should play it at high quality. The issue is in the engine and the ATi cards.

make sure you enter

n_patch 0

and ati_subdiv 0 or something like that in your console

Someone please correct those to the proper ones, as I'm sure they are not the exact commands to enter.

Disabling tru form in the control panel , for some reason, doesn't always disable it in CS.

Cheers,

I play CS fine at constant 75FPS because i have Vsync ON. I like the smoothness of it. With Vsync OFF i get a constant 100FPS on my system (check sig). I have AA/AF maxed out and it sometimes drops to 50fps with allot of smoke nades it chokes out my 9800pro. Its basically a really old game and not ment for ati cards. But i run CS great on my 9800pro with everything maxed out.

do you have the chipset drivers installed? go to start run type dxdiag and make sure agp acceleration is enabled

what does ati_npatch and ati_subdiv do, and what values should i set them to? bump

Am I the only one wondering why 30 FPS is that bad? Maybe I've been stuck with a Geforce 2 MX for too long, but I don't think you can really notice a significant difference with anything over 30.

radish you are very very wrong :D get a new card and see the wonderful difference of having higher fps

ruh roh ..might get into the whole fps debate again ..I can tell a huge difference between 60 and 85 ..30 would be unbearable IMHO ..

anyhoot, back to topic ..do you have anything running in background like virus scanner that is set to auto scanning?.. or internet keyboard ...or ..oh I dont know ..

a reminder that 1.6 fubared a bunch of stuff so ppl that used to pull 100fps on gf2mx's no longer can come close to that...

Mines along the same lines as rusty's. XP2200+, A7V8X, 512 pc2700, 9800 Pro. It runs like a dog...only a tad better than my Ti4200. I've done everything there is to do, it's just a bottleneck and that can only be fixed with money.

Haha that's funny. Fixing a bottleneck for Half-life with todays' hardware with money. I think the major problem might be that the drivers were not uninstalled correctly.

And oh man do I remember the days of 30fps. I used to love 30fps and now I begin to really notice it. But I guess I am just to adept to it to really care if framerate drops that low in games. Too bad I do not have to worry about it with my 9800pro on the way ;p.

I didnt read any replys, but why the hell are u using 1280, thats such a terrible resolution, use 1024 @ the MAX for Cs anything over it rapes yoru FPS in 1.6, i use 800 and its perfect ive played cs for 3 years, and i do so on a top level, and I can tell you from experience you wont notice any diff from 1024 to 1280 sept 100fps, and the fact that you have 2100 ram doesnt help either

Chris

put settings on balanced for direct3d and opengl

turn OFF VPU recovery
vpu recovery fucks with every game i own so i dont use it.

i have the same 2x 256 pc2100 a amd2500 ocd to 2.205 and a 9800 Pro. I pin the fps to the max in all HL mods.

thats weird that ur 9800pro is getting that bad of performance, i currently have a GF4 TI4400 and it runs at 100fps constant on my 3.3GHz P4. i am ordering a AIW 9800pro next week, i hope i dont end up with the same problem...

Ummm, this is the HL engine we're talking about here.

I can run CS/HL @ 1600x1200 with 6xAA and 16xAF and not drop below 60FPS.

Not everyone is satisfied playing at shitty ass resolutions :p

Like I said before, make sure that the npatch and subdiv settings in console are off (set to 0).

Getting faster RAM with his current setup wouldn't give him a performance increase at all unless his FSB is overclocked.

Rusty,
What setting of AA/AF do you have it on, and are you running cs in OpenGl or DirectX?

Whoever said pc2100 sucks ass is erroneous! I have 1 gb or pc2100 ram running with a GF3 and I get a good 45-65 FPS @ 1024X768 or whatever it is.

Like some of the others said, make sure you have all your latest drivers/patches installed and turn VSYNC off. Are you using onboard sound or something? Also try turning AA and AF off to see if you notice a difference.

I had a usb keyboard that was toying with my fps. So this is very true. Try turning off all of the ati_ commands in your console, turn off vgpu recovery and all the other unnecessary crap that you don't need. Also, if you've just switched from an nvidia to an ati on the same format there could be something involved with that.

Best of luck, after too long a time counter-strike is still godly. Also for the people playing with high resolutions I doubt you could compare with me or any of the old school players. Majority of people are still on 800x600 even though the newer hardware can run anything from 1600x1200 back down again. I'm used to this "shitty resolution" and I will never change it on the HL engine.

Wasn't truform supposed to be a really awesome technology for making things look better? Why do people always disable it (I haven't tried enabling it yet). I know what its about, I feel they should work with it some, it could have potential.

Shitty ass resolutions?? What is wrong with 1024, like I stated? I play cs on a professional level, I win money when I go to Lans to play CS, you dont, no person who is good enough to win money playing cs uses a resolution higher then 1024, because its worthless.

You mentioned 800x600 :p

I used to play CS at 1600x1200, but I was using a GeForce4ti4600 and the FPS would get SOOO bad with smoke gernades (ex. while zoomed in w/ AWP occasionall 15 FPS) but other than that 100 FPS steady. Yea it had a problem where it would basically cut the fps in half with smoke no matter what, so I backed down to 1024 and ran w/ developer 1 and had like 200~300 FPs, thus when the smoke cut it down in half, it still was smooth, and that resolution has stuck with me now w/ my new ATI card (although I have added the AA and AF now).

I have the same system, except 256 DDR instead of 512 pc2700, and my CS runs flawless at 100fps w/ 6xAA and 16xAF
