9800 Pro HELP

Hey guys

Just got a new video card from a member here, Jzegers24, but Im having some problems. The new card is a BBA 9800Pro 128MB. Im upgrading from a 9500np.
Heres the situation:
1. Receieved card from UPS. Proceeded to run DriverCleaner with 9500 still in. (I forgot to uninstall drivers first, I simply ran drivercleaner) *yah, n00b mistake.
2. Then I installed 9800pro, everything is good so far. Then I installed 4.11 cats and rebooted.
3. Upon reboot the fun starts. While booting (WinXP) during the initial boot-up there were some funky colors showing up in the system info screens. Once WinXP started up the screen became more and more plauged artifacts.
3. Uninstalled drivers again properly and ran drivercleaner, as well as removed any trace of old drivers.
4. Upon reboot, there were still artifacts. Reinstalled cats and still same prob. Same colors in the boot and in windows. This time, when windows starts screen flashes and goes black. Monitor indicates no input and shuts off.
5. I have since re-installed my 9500 and am searching for some help.

Could this be a bad card, or something to do with my drivers?

My suggestion? Read the instructions that come with Driver Cleaner, follow them, then install the 9800 Pro and the new drivers. If that doesn't work, I'd consider the 9800 Pro to be busted. Sometimes you can seem to do everything OK, get wierd results, and fix it by just re-doing the right steps over again. Computers can be wierd like that.

Even though he said he did it right I'd suggest this too, can't just give up, keep trying till it's just obvious to you as well. lol

I know he said he did it, I just suggested he do it again just in case. I've had driver uninstalls/reinstalls flake out for no apparent reason, only to go away when I re-did the uninstall/reinstall process.
 
Hmm, did it again and followed DriverCleaners inst. to a T
Tthis time, during first boot, I was getting artifacts even before drivers were installed.
 
with ATI's unified drivers, you dont need to uninstall drivers when converting from a 9500pro to a 9800pro, they use the same drivers. Its not a driver issue, Its either a heat issue/power issue or a dead card.
 
Lol, yea did you forget to plug the card in with the molex plug? That would be the first thing, next I would try and find out if the card is overheating at all. I would pull off the heatsink and take off all of the thermal paste and apply some new thermal paste and give that a shot.
 
How would I go about best testing it for heat being a problem, ie: will it have to be super hot to the touch?
And with applying new thermal paste, wouldnt that make a small difference, not a huge one.
 
Well I mean make sure the heatsink is on correctly. You can try touching the heatsink to see if its really hot but if its not pulling the heat off the card correctly then the heatsink wont even feel warm to the touch.
 
Yah, took the heatsink off and the thermal stuff on there is this dry stuff that looks really bad. Gonna try putting on some new stuff on and try that.
 
Clean it off with rubbing alcohol and then put some new stuff on there. But you did plug in the plug on the video card to your power supply right?
 
ok, put some new stuff on (generic, I wasnt going to wate good AS5 on something that overheats at LESS than default clock speeds)
It still artifacts, so I think it might be safe to say this thing is DOA!

And yes, I plugged the molex in :p
 
Hmm, it shouldnt be doa, as i JUST got the card back a matter of days before i sent it out to you ducay from ati. Freshly replaced by ati themselves. Hit me up on aim ducay. Thx bro! :)
 
Also, on the 12v rail, check the amps..higher watts doesnt make a psu better. If its pushing something low like 18amps through the 12v rail you may have corruption. If you put in a psu that puts like 30+ amps through the 12v rail that may eliminate the problems. I had all sorts of graphic corruption and it went away when I got my new psu.
 
I have the card on its on seperate line coming out of the PSU (a 350w Antec)

It may be a separate line, but it may not being getting enough power. HDs, cdroms, some fans, cathode lights all rely on the 12v rail. (that yellow line coming from the psu) Newer graphic cards are energy hogs and require alot of amps. If your card is starving, it wont perform up to par and will give you graphic glitches. I had the same thing with mine, only after a corruption I'd reboot just to get the msg asking if my MOLEX was plugged into my 9800pro..and it was. After I changed my PSU Ive ever seen any corruption and never seen that message again.

Check the AMPS being pushed through the +12v rail and if its lower than 20 amps I'd recommend getting a new PSU.
 
Noob question, how do I check it, short of busting out a multimeter
 
Bust out a fucking mulitmeter :p actually that's just the most accurate way to test... you can go into most bioses and they have pc health sensors... or use sisandra pro (google it)

It's under voltage sensors, if you dont have it in the motherboard information tab, then your motherboard doesn't have sensors and you'll need to check bios to confirm that and/or grab the volt-o-meter.

+3.3: 2.75V
+5: 4.87V
+12: 11.92V
-12: -12.61V
-5: -5.00V
