Is there a shim on the stock cooler? I want to apply Arctic Silver, but I dont know if the stock cooler has a shim or not

it does.. but you shoudl be fine putting the AS5

But wouldn't removing the shim leave a space between the GPU and heat sink?

Sometimes. Some 9800p cores are actually higher than the shim. Mine wasnt, so I just ground off the base of the heatsink, leaving a square to contact the GPU. I killed my first 9800pro by removing the shim, I swore I would never do it again :D
 
Ok I just got done putting AS Ceramique on...let's hope i didn't ruin anything :D

No no no, I thought he shim was ON the heatsink, that's how a realy shim typically works. A real shim fills in a space bettwen two objects...I thought the shim was on the core.
