Hello there,

I had a 9500 -> 9700 Softmod and used to get around 15,000 Marks in 3DMark2001.

I just got hold of a saphire 9800 Pro, and it is only showing as a 9800 in device manager/display properties? and i only obtained 13,000 Marks in 3DMark2001.

I have run the 3dMark2001 using both AIT Catalyst and Omega Catalyst drivers.

I checked the stickers on the back of the card and they do say 9800 pro,

Any Ideas?

Cheers

Chris

well, its quite possible the 9700 mod had tighter memory timings, which could net higher 01 scores, but really, who cares about 01? its CPU limited and dx8. run 03 and see what kind of score you get

also, the 9x00 series cards are all series cards, my 9600 pro shows up at "ATi 9600 Series" in the task manager

very true, mine does not say 9800 series, it just says 9800 full stop.

I'm downloading 3DMark2005 now, so i'll see how that goes, but should be expecting around 2200 from what i've read.

Try '03 it's not as graphic intensive and will be more interesting for you to watch (you'll get better framerates).

I was just surprised to see it go down, of all things, and by quite a lot.

I'll also put the 9700 Softmod back in and run 05 on that too. just so i can compare.

:D

are you sure you didnt get the 128bit versoin of the 9800 pro?

if you did, that 9700 would kick its ass

lol, yes I am pretty dang sure he got the 128bit version..haha

Is that thing even a pro? Or is a vanilla 9800 with an Asus "GT" treament?

LOL. I've never heard of the ASUS GT referred to that way, but it's definitely on the money. :p

I think i know what hes talking about. I used to have that card (Before i bought the 6600GT of my dreams). It really does do that crap and i dont know why. I hear everyone talking about how wonderful their 9800 pro is, and mine was the red headed stepchild. You really should just go with the 6600GT, its a MUCH better card and a hell of a lot cheaper (specially if you get the PCI-E version).

Save that, should he get the 6600GT PCI-E he's going to need to get a new mobo, and possibly proc..

you got me confused, 128Bit ? how do i find out? I got 1750 in 3dmark05 which sucks basically, worse than my 9700 softmod.

If it is the case I'll just shift it,

Thanks guys.

Chris

ok i mashed the serial numbers into google and some 128Bit references came back, basically do 128 Bit = pants? if so what should i get, got around £80 quid budget, eBay wise ?

These are the numbers of the card itself, and it claims to be a 9800 pro, on the sticker.

PN = 1024-1C47-00-SA
SKU = 11016-01
SN = A042500076811

yup, you got an atlantis card.

This is from sapphiretech.com check out your SKU number on the sheet.

You need excel to view that link, but it does say you have a 128-bit card...just like it says that i have a lite edition 9800 Pro.

so basically these cards are dirt ?

D'OH !

What should i get for around £80 then ?

want something at least a little better than my 9700 softmod.

Many Thanks

Chris

Look at your card. If you have your memory all aligned in one row (instead of the normal "L" shaped arrangement), this means you have only a 128bit memory bus. You can still overclock the card to get some improvement in performance, but basically you have a castrated 9800.

ok so i have a pants card, which i'm gonna shift first thing tomorrow, but what should i get then?

£80 is budget ish, eBay is my friend lol.

Got any ideas? 9700 Softmod speeds + is a must though otherwise I'll cry.

Cheers

Chris

How much in US $ is L80?

From my experience, a 9800 isn't a vast improvement over a 9700. And my 6600GT is about the same performance as my 9800. So I'm kind of thinking that there may not be an upgrade in your price range.

I think a 6600GT is about 40% faster than a 9700 pro.

I have no clue what that is in USD. But I will say look for a 256bit 9800pro, 6600gt
Those are like your only choices. I don't think a 5900ultra is in your choice range but it might. A 5900 is not better then a 6600gt. And a 9800pro is better then it too.

For best to worst that you might be able to afford:

1.6600gt
2.9800 pro 256 BIT
3. 5900 ultra (I think this is better then 9700pro verification please!!)

Yes the 6600gt is 128bit but it has faster clocks then the 9800pro and actually does run better. Actually it runs alot better and its not too expenisve. If you order off here then everything will be much cheaper and you will have more choices.

While it will perform a a bit better for some games, the entire 5xxx line isn't worth investing in, especially at this point. If you can afford it, get the 6600GT - while the 9800Pro (256 bit memory controller) is going to be faster than the 9700Pro, it's not enough of a jump to really bother upgrading. If you aren't going to the current gen of cards, then save a bit, and then go to them. Otherwise you're just not going to get your money's worth.

well i actually had a 9700 NP. so perhaps a 9800 pro 256 Bit would be a little cheaky upgrade.

Thanks for the feedback so far, really opened my eyes about how little I know about graphics cards these days.

9800 pro 256 Bit, is there any tell tale signs I can look for before ordering off eBay to make sure i dont get a 128Bit again ?

Do I want
256-bit

memory interface
OR
full floating point

Thanks people ^^

The easiest way to tell is that all 256bit 9800 cards have their memory arranged in an L shape on the card (and I think it's almost always the little square memory chips instead of the big flat rectangular ones).

my memory on my card looks like

0
0
0
0 0
0 0

more or less.

should be spaces infront of the bottem 2 rows but i cant do it on this forum.

finally got a "real" 9800 pro and got 2400 in mark05 and 16500 in mark01. im a happy bunny now :D
