9800 Pro + CS 1.6 = 100% CPU!?!?

I recently upgraded to an ATI 9800 Pro 128MB from a Geforce 2 Ti 64MB DDR. I really love the dual display :)

However, I get 100% CPU usage when playing CS 1.6 via Steam. It use to be 15-20% CPU usage with my old Geforce 2 Ti. WTF is going on? I uninstalled my old nVidia drivers and ran Driver Cleaner before installing the ATI 4.11's. Then I tried the latest Omega's... still 100% CPU Usage. I even tried reformating with a slipstreamed XP Pro SP2. Same BS!

Maybe there is a patch or something for Steam/CS? I don't play any other games, so I can't test the card out with anything else. :( Currently, I'm using the latest Omega drivers with nForce drivers v5.10. Maybe my 1900+ is too slow?

System Specs:

Athlon XP 1900+
Thermaltake Volcano 7 + Arctic Silver 3
Asus A7N8X Deluxe (Rev 1.06 : Bios 1008)
Corsair XMS TwinX 512MB PC3200 Cas2
ATI 9800 Pro 128MB
WD 74GB Raptor (System)
HighPoint RocketRAID 133
2x WD 80GB 8MB (RAID-0 : 64k Stripe)
WD 100GB 2MB (Storage)
nForce2 Nvidia NIC
nForce2 Nvidia SoundStorm

Any feedback would be appreciated.

If I am playing a game I want 100% CPU utilization. Why would you want only 20% of you CPU actually playing the game? I don't see the problem here...

Your computer can't hyperthread and Athlons are not really made for multitasking (at least the older models) like P4s are. However, even if your getting 100%-thats not a big deal, unless you want to do other stuff at the same time-such as listen to music, burn CDs, etc....

Are you getting better FPS with your 9800 Pro?

u arn't doing this like ur in the game and alt+delete+control and check the task manager for the cpu ultilization are u? well if ya want to solve the problem run the game in direct3d instead of opengl.... but when i had my 9800xt.. running in direct3d and minimzing would loose the sound and running in direct3d in cs 1.6 even with a 9800pro on a oldass game would not get u 100fps constant.. 60ish in direct3d.... but running in direct3d for me got the cpu usage to normal when the game is not physically running..

Yeah i'm doing it the task manager way... so i'm fine then?

FPS is the same... then again i use to get 100FPS with my GF2 Ti.

OMFG firstly i want to know how the hell cs only used 20% on a gf2 and how low were your settings set...

Same settings as i have now. 800x600 16bit.

I still think this 100% CPU is not right... because i feel choppyness and such, and my mouse lags too. Like i'll move all the way left, but it won't go fully left.

And it's not lag, because happens on LAN as well. :sigh:

ok you should be able to run at 1024x768+ 32 bit

and you should be at 100% while the game runs it has been that way with every game i have ever played... i am not sure why your getting choppy ness you said you reloaded xp sp2 did you do a clean load...

obviously u will get 100%...the game needs all the processing power it can get to generate those frames...unless they have a super powerful GPU that could do all the calculations by itself... wont happen for some time..

sounds to me like you were originally gpu limited with the gf2 (the processor could only go as fast as the gpu), and with the 9800 you are now cpu limited (game will only go as fast as the cpu will allow).

:)

Mmmmm....bottlenecks...gotta love em. Sounds like new processor time.

CS 1.6 is suppose to run @ 100% CPU

But my friend's runs @ 15-20% CPU with CS 1.6. His system is a 2000+ with a GF4 Ti 4200 128MB.

My HL2 just came in today so I'm about to install it and see if everything runs smoothly. I hope so!

Most games are generally at "100% CPU" - even if this means "I'm not doing anything but waiting for input" they're going to be at 100%.

If performance is sub-par, that's another problem.

With his machine I believe you would be able to run through CS 1.6 flawlessly. The game is far from demanding compard to today's standards. If that is the only game you play, I would not recommend upgrading your processor for nothing, since you have more than enough horsepower to play that game.

Come on guys remember you could run CS just fine on a 400mhz at 800x600, maybe not 1.6, but I doubt that it has become that much more intense, considering it still runs on the same engine.

Well I installed HL2 and it worked fine, and the FPS drops have disapeared with CS 1.6. Weird.

Thanks for all the support guys.
