9800 Pro AIW = No Boot..

I gave my friend my ATI Radeon 9800 Pro to use, but his computer won't boot up with it in. When he unhooks molex that goes from that card to the power supply, it boots up but the screen says "please attach cable from Radeon to power supply."

If he plugs it in, it won't boot up (the power button on his computer just flashes). I told him to unhook all power cables except the one to his master drive, and the Radeon, but that still doesn't work. Basically, it won't boot up even though the card seems to be hooked up properly.

He has a Dell that's about 3 years old with a P3 1.6. His brother has a 9700 Pro and the same computer and it works fine. What could be the problem.

Probably it's insufficient power. Do you know what the specs are for your friends PSU?
 
It says it's a 250W max output. He was using 3 7200RPM hard drives and 2 CD drives, but even when he unhooked those, it doesn't boot up.
 
even though 250w should suffice, at startup more power is used than any other time during usage. the psu just might not be able to handle the voltage drop and or amperage draw at startup with even just the processor, the card & 1 hdd
 
is there anything else that can cause this?

If not, I'll tell him he needs a more powerful PSU. What would you recommend? I had a 380W TRUE and it worked fine
 
I had this same exact problem with an AIW 9800. This is a fairly common problem with that particular card. Because of all the extra components on the AIW it draws too much voltage for a moment upon startup. Maybe the 250w isn't enough, maybe a better powersupply would help. BUT, I had the same problem with a fricken antec true430 (has to do with overvolt protections being tripped). So really it doesn't matter, some hardware works with the card, some doesn't. Some people say it would work if they switched motherboards, other people got it to work when they switched psu brands. You could try all kinds of shit, try connecting the card on the same chain as your hardrive that might work.

I tried just about everything but in the end i just rma'd the bastard. Took awhile but they sent me back a card that works... most of the time. I still get the problem every once and awhile. When that happens i just open my case unplug power from the 9800, turn on computer, wait 2 seconds, then plug it back in.

It pisses me off that Ati produces shit that doesn't work (which is what this comes down to) even if it may work with the right combination of hardware. When i spend over 300$ for a single piece of hardware I don't really feel like playing luck of the draw in getting it to do what it's supposed to. /end pissed off rant.

anyways good luck, it's a kickass card when you can get it to start :rolleyes:
 
Well it looks like he'll just have to get a new PSU, but since he has a Dell, that means getting a new case too. I hope that solves the problem.

I had it running in my computer no problem, but I had an antec case that came with an antec PSU that's 380W. I guess I'll recommend the same one to him.

Anyone have anything for sale BTW..?
 
I have a Dell. Its 2 years old in April and it has a 250W rated power supply. My 9800Pro (not AIW) works fine. Dell rates their power supplies differently than others. A 250W Dell rated power supply peaks at 345-350watts. Check it out on the Dell forums. I aint fulla feces I promise.

And BTW, you can get a replacement power supply for a Dell machine. They are made to fit and function in Dell's machines. The link is in the Dell forums somewhere. Give it a search. It's getting a replacement case (from Dell) thats impossible. They are such tight wads about not letting you upgrade your machine to much. They want you buying a new PC every year. Fuck that. $2000-3000 for their top-o-the-line shit is way to much. I'd buy an AlienWare for its looks be4 I spend mega-bucks on another factory built.

My custom built is almost done! I need a CPU/memory/HD ($570 bucks for what I want...ouch) and I'm in business. :D
 
just beware that even if he does get a new psu it may not help anything. Cheapest route may be to rma the aiw if it's still under warranty.
