9800 needs better cooling

Suggestions please.

I'm first going to remove the heatsink and check to see if the thermal compount is properly applied and only after that, I will buy something better. I have the stock HS + an 80 mm fan on it currently and it's not doing a great job.

I haven't checked into the cooling solutions yet. I can get this thing to ~400/360 without problems for the first 30 minutes but after that I start to artifact slightly and as time goes by it gets worst and my theory is that if I get a much better cooling solution the artifacting will go away and I will be able to hit 9800pro speeds for ram and XT speeds for core without artifacting: 412/380.

We can only pray now can't we? lol.

Actually when something gets hot it means it's doing a good job spreading the heat around but not a good enough job dissapating the heat (6+ years as an a/c & heating technician assistant).

The silencer would probably be better in a case thats got less airflow, but since the silencer is one large plate of copper that contacts both the core and the ram if your core is substantially hotter than the RAM chips you might just heat the RAM more than cooling them separately from the GPU core. I've noticed that the core of the 9800 I've got, especially with any overclocking gets extremely hot. You also should take into consideration that the silencer is a two slot solution where as the other method would be one slot.
 
I forgot to mention that I have some Iceberq copper ramsinks on the ram as well =/ waste of 10 bucks if I get a vga, damn it and I might too.

The stuff under the hsf was like :eek: dried toothpaste that's caked into flakey paint. Needless to say I spent about 30 minutes scraping at it finally got it mostly clean and put on some aluminum generic cpu stuffs but anyhow, I'm still testing.

Another vote for a VGA Silencer. I put one on my 9800 Pro and besides the card running better it dropped mu case temps by about 3C. I sold that card and bought a BFG 6800 GT. Just got my Silencer for that and will install. The key thing with a Silencer is take your time and be careful.
 
Got a 9800 Pro 256, in my Compaq case was running 81 C at idle (according to LM63 temp monitor). Put an ATI Silencer 3 on it and it's down to 40's-50's @ stock, and low 60's when OC'd to XT speeds (412/365). Best $30 I ever had someone spend on me at Christmastime.
