9800 GTX vs GT 730 for older PCs?

I have two similarly-spec'd C2D or C2 quad computers that my kids use. One already has a 9800 GTX and am thinking about getting the 730 for the other PC, as it only as integrated graphics at the moment.

I'm curious as to which two cards (9800 GTX vs GT 730) would perform better in 3D games such as Grid, Portal 1/2, etc. This will help me decide which PC to put the new card in. Thanks.
 
I know this site is crap: link, but if you look at the card specs you can see that the 730 actually has more cuda cores at 384 vs 128 for the 9800. The downside to that is that the 730 comes in either a gddr5 or ddr3 memory config at 64bit, so your memory bandwidth will be slow or really slow on the 730. I would think depending on the resolution you are playing at it might be a close battle between the two.
 
I'd say the GT 740 is a better comparison to the 9800 GTX. The cuda cores are but one part of the GPU. According to wikipedia: Core config: 9800 GTX: 128:64:16 -------384:16:8 GT 730. GT 740...... 384:32:16
The 9800 GTX is superior to the 730 on some points. The 9800 GTX is also equal or faster than the GT 740 going by specs.

9800 GTX: 648 GigaFlops 70 GB/s mem bandwidth 10.8 GP/s (Billion Pixels/Sec) 43.2 GT/s (Billion Textures/Second)
GT 730 gddr5: 306 GFlops 40 GB/s 7.2 GP/s 14.4 GT/s
GT 740 ddr3: 762 GFlops 28.8 GB/s 15.9 GP/s 31.8 GT/s
GT 740 gddr5 762 GFlops 80 GB/s 15.9 GP/s 31.8 GT/s.

Theres one thing the 700 series totally wins at and that is power usage.
The lowest tier cards of any series are never very powerful.
 
If you are going to actually spend money buying a card, and you do actually play games on this computer, then why not go for something like a used GTX660 or something alone those lines. It would almost certainly cost less than buying a 740 new, and it would shit all over both cards you mentioned in terms of performance, likely multiple times over.
 
I'm gonna drop another vote for the 740. I replaced both 9800GTX cards in my old core 2 quad rig about 2 years ago, when they stopped being supported by the latest nvidia driver. The 740 (especially GDDR5 variant) is more powerful, and is much better supported going forward.
