98 startup disk from CD?

Does anyone know of the equivilant of a win98 startup floppy disk but on cd?? I need one for a machine without a floppy drive.

You should be able to boot right off the Win 98 install CD if your machine supports booting from CDRom.

Gah.. I wish they wouldn't be so vague at bootdisk.com, like a better navigation system.

in the bootable cd's section, they tell you how to make one from a bootable diskette etc.. I dont have that, why can't they give you the source files and show you how to make one.

I will scour bootdisk.com once again.

Actually, this is not quite correct. Only those "legal" copies of Windows 98 that are bundled with a new computer system and some of the "legitimate" OEM copies of Windows 98 are on bootable CDs. There is no retail-boxed version of Windows 98 that came on bootable CDs - every retail-boxed copy of Windows 98 came with a setup/startup floppy disk, but the CD-ROM isn't bootable, IIRC.

Please note that I have not purchased a full, non-upgrade retail-boxed version of Windows other than the first release of Windows 98 - and the CD-ROM disk on that copy isn't bootable. I tried booting with it on my previous AMD-based setup - but no go.

I - don't - have - a - 98 - disk.

I already know that win 98 disks are bootable. This situation doesn't involve loading win98 on to a computer.


The problem is, I bought winxp in like 2001/2 or whenever it was released, The disk is now damaged (I think it got damaged approximatly 8 months ago) Why I didn't get it replaced then is beyond me.

Fortunatly I made my own backup copy, *which uses my original purchased cd key* The problem is that I tried booting up with my backup and found it will not boot off the cd. Further research shows me that I can use any startup disk and then install. I have no copy of win98 and further more I have no floppy drive.

This is why I was looking for some kind of good simple boot cd that would alow me to reinstall windows tonight.


Now can anyone tell me if MS will replace my chewed xp disk from 8 months ago? Is there a time limit or something, it figures I wait until I need to reinstall to actually inquire about a new disk.

Do you just need to get files off of the computer? Or are you trying to reinstall xp? If you're just trying to get files off of the comptuer you can use

. It will automount your ntfs drives, and fat32 drives. Or I can tell you the files you need to copy once I get to work on monday. We make win95 and win98 combo bootable cd's for our old crappy computers.

You used to be able to down load the XP bootdisks from microsoft and I know they have them at bootdisk.com

The XP bootdisks that can still be downloaded from Microsoft can only be extracted to floppy disks. As a result, they are only recommended if your system cannot boot from a CD-ROM and you're going to install Windows XP on that system from scratch.
