I bought a 7950GT OC from BFG, I was told I should always get 60 fps in World of Warcraft. But in large raids my FPS drops to 20-30. Does anyone have a clue why or how I can find out why? (using current drivers) Also never goes above 50C.

AMD X2 4400+
Asus M2NPV-VM
Corsairs 2x1gb DDR2 800 XMS
Onboard sound
Zalman 9700 LED
BFG 7950GT OC
Seagate 320 GB SATA
Antec 430w PSU

9750? Awesome :)

quadcore 9xxx series ftw

On a serious note, with your 7950, what resolution are you running it at?

1280x1024 60hz
Not in windowed mode, probably should of said that in my first post lol.

I have an analog monitor in the second spot of the card because I couldn't figure out how to turn on the onboard video for it. (I had planned on eventualy buying a second cheap pci card for the second one, but I'm kinda broke)

Wow I'm an idiot, I just noticed I reversed the numbers on my card. Its a 7950 not a 9750.

Did you remove all old drivers when you installed the card?

I can't really imagine a 7950 getting 20fps at that resolution unless something isn't right.

I'd suggest getting a faster CPU. On my 3Ghz system I get 55min/200max fps.

I really doubt that the CPU is what's bottlenecking him. I ran wow back in the day with an AMD xp 1900...it's not like it requires a heavy duty processor.

Yeah my cpu never goes above 66% usage with WoW, Ventrilo, and Windows Media Player on.

Also never uses over 1.2 gigs of my 2 gigs of ram.

(BTW incase you don't know its a dual core cpu, don't know if you were refering you have a dualcore 3ghz or a single)

um, maybe it's not your video card, it's your internet struggling with all the crap that's going on?

When I tried out WoW with my current system I was running everything maxed out except AA which was on 2x supersample at 1680x1050 resolution and getting 60+ fps in towns and dropping down into the 50's in areas with a lot of grass/trees (I'm guessing due to all the AA that was going on on the foliage)

So yeah, that seems a bit odd. You could always try OCing your cpu if yer comfortable with doing so and see if that helps out any as I think WoW likes cpu speed. You can always try OCing the graphics card as well (once again if your comfortable with doing so) and see if that helps any, as it is possible (Though unlikely) that your card can't keep up.

EDIT:: Since WoW isn't multithreaded it can't really use more than 50% of your cpu power so the cpu being only up to 66% means little. And what do you have your AA set at, as if you have it cranked up that could be the problem.

I did not know that wow could only use half my processor that kinda sucks. I do not know what AA is. (I am a computer noob to a degree) I just started wow with nothing else on aside from windows, its using around 40% of my cpu.

In Teldrassil with all the grass and trees I was getting a solid 60 fps, it only seems to slow down in Shattrath (40-60) and in 25 man raids (20-40).

I've found that the two biggest fps killers in WoW are:

-Having your Image Settings in the Nvidia control panel set to High Quality rather than Quality. I was getting pretty pathetic framerate at High Quality. It was playable, but I didn't think it was running as fast as it could have. When I dropped it to Quality, my framerate improved dramatically with little visual difference. It was noticeable, but nothing major.

-Draw distance. If your have a slower(ish) CPU, reducing the draw distance can help framerate a lot. I reduced mine and barely noticed it. Just not something I really pay attention to while playing the game.

-In game anisotropic filtering levels. Maybe it's just cause I have an Nvidia 6x series card, but maxing out the Anisotropic Filtering severely reduces my fps. So I put it to mid setting and all was dandy.

Honestly though, although WoW isn't particularly CPU intensive, I think you're just CPU limited. When you get to playing 25 man raids, there's going to be a lot more strain on the CPU than simply being in Darkshire or whatever with nobody else around.

Currently I play at 1680x1050x32 with 2x AA and half AF. I average 30-40fps, topping out at 90-110 depending on where I am. The game is more than playable. Much different than Everquest, which I played hardcore for 4 years. :)

Ok, I will try to drop my AF down a bit, and what is AA? could some one clarify this?

Also, thank you all that spent the time to try to help a noob out.

Update: I ran Aquamark 3 and recived a score of 91K So I am guessing there must be some other problem causing my FPS in wow.

I think its has to do with your drivers or your forceware control panel settings. My wife plays on a 7600gt, 1gig of ram and a stock x2 +3800 and she never pulls less than 40 fps (even in large raids).

Something is wrong with your setup.
