i just got the x1600pro and playing CS at same settings as i did w/ the 9700pro. Now when i go through the smoke...FPS drops to 20-30. w/ 9700 i still had 100. whats wrong?

specs:
Athlon 2500+ OC to 2.8
gig of memory
win XP
directx 9c

the only diff. thing i kno of thats diff. is this time im using the lastest CAT w/ CCC. before w/ the 9700 i used 5.12 w/ no CCC. just the drivers. can that be whats wrong?

Depends on AA/AF settings between the two. You can't expect an x1600 to run 8xaa and 16xaf and have the same fps as a 9700pro running 0aa/0af.

Sounds like possibly something went wrong with the drivers, i'd try to reinstall them. However, i'm not sure i believe that you got 100FPS in smoke with a 9700PRO.

When i had a setup very similar to that (2500+ @ 3200+, 1GB ram, and a 9700PRO), my framerate often dipped down to 30-50 in the smoke depending on how much action there was. That was with 1024x768, 2xaa, 4xaf, and all settings on medium or low. My FPS stayed at about 60-75 most of the time, but in a busy situation with smoke i'd often see it dropping down to 30-40FPS

The 9700 Pro has a bit more texturing power and TONS more memory bandwidth, both of which help in older games like CS:Source (which use multitexture effects, and lightmaps).

If you had asked anyone here, they would have told you the x1600 Pro is a poor upgrade for a 9700 / 9800 Pro. The damn thing is SLOWER than the 6600 GT.

The only sensible PS 3.0 AGP upgrade for the 9700 Pro is the 6800 GS, or the 7800 GS. You can also pick up an old x800 or x850 part for clearance prices, if you don't mind missing out on HDR (outside of HL2).

Yeah, sadly he speaks the truth. Generally speaking your much better going with the previous generations high-end cards than the current mid-end. That's why i got an X850XT around christmas time (that and my poor 9700pro finally died :( )

I got a x850xt refurb a month or two ago due to my 9800se type 2--->9700pro (basically). Seems to be alot of people did something similar.

oh no. i ddidnt upgrade from that. it went dead on me and seeing that the 9700 was enough power for me i just decided to go w/ the 1600 since its somewhere near the same power and money issues.

oh yea and the 9700 has more texturing power and stuff? damn i thto the 1600 > 9700 in everything...

Try OCing it, those --600 version cards may not be much to look at stock but if you OC them right with some good cooling, you will have one bad little monster.
