how do the 9700pro and the 9600xt compare as far as performance? any links to site where they have been tested head to head would be nice, i cant find any

Let's see...9600XT has 4 pixel pipelines and a 128 bit mem bus...where as the 9700 has 8 pixel pipelines and a 256-bit bus. It's not that simple :p. BUT that 9700 pro is still the better card.

so why did they quit making it if it was such a good card, i see now on thier site they have a mobility radeon 9700, are they going to be using the technology for that to make thier mobile cards?

does anyone have the answer to that, i guess not, but why would they quit a good thing

Because they came up with something better.. the 9800Pro/XT. The reason for the rest of the line is simply marketing. People want "newer" version/models, etc. Newer is not necessarily better. IE: the 9500Pro is older than 9600Pro... but I'd take the 9500Pro any day.

Because they replaced it with the 9800 Series. Those cards are a lot more expensive and complex than a 9600, hence why they don't just make the 9700 the new low-end. And the Mobility 9700 has very little in common with the desktop version, it is in fact more of a 9600XT, but ATi borked the naming of the 9600/9600 Pro/9600Pro Turbo…you get the idea and named it the 9700.

Desktop 9700 was replaced by the 9800 series. For all intents and purposes, the 9800 is a higher-clocked 9700 with some other minor tweaks.

The 9500 was replaced by the 9600. These two are pretty different beasts, and only the 9600 XT comes close to the old 9500 Pro. But the 9600 is a lot cheaper to produce and doesn't require external power, and the design scaled into a very effective mobile graphics platform as well.

The Mobile 9700 is not based on the desktop 9700. If you check out any of the (p)reviews, eg. the [H]ardOCP one, you'll see that it's a higher-clocked Mobile 9600 with more tweaks.

9700 is a better card for performance, all around.

if the performance isnt everything in this decision, and you are looking for vivo and such, then a 9600 series all in wonder might be the best thing on the menu, as it will play your games ok and give you vivo stuff for cheaper than a 9700 all in wonder.

I've tested both boards in my system when I was thinking about getting the 9600XT. My Radeon 9700 Pro performed alot better. Looked and feeled better. I would get a 9700 Pro if you could manage it.

And as he said 128 bit vs 256 bit, and the extra pipline is a plus. You get tell when you start getting really complicated games going. I tested with Q3, UT2003, BF1942 DC, 3DMARK2001 Pro. 3DMARK2003 Demo.

While some of the scores were close. The 9700 always won. This was with the 3.9 Cats.
