ok, i had my 9700pro for 2 years now, and one day i decide to clean out my pc case, so i take all the hardware out and when i finished i put it all back in place, but when i turned my pc on i noticed smoke billowing out of the back of my vid cards power connector, so i quickly ripped my computers power cable from the wall socket (followed with a loud curse), and inspected my video card, (i have a viewing window by the way), i noticed that one of the solder points that hold the power connector in place has melted a tiny bit, so i thaught "no big deal the card isnt burnt", so i put it back in, boot up my pc and to my suprise all my monitors display shows is many rectangular multicolored blocks filling my screen,(once again followed by a curse word). i tried it a few more times, same problem, so i grabbed a 4 meg card that i had lying around and i am currently using that "sigh" :( .
i have not tampered with my card, i have never overclocked or put heatsinks on it, and for the damn thing to go out like this really pisses me off.
i am RMA'ing the card either repair or replace.
has anybody else out there expierienced this bull sh!t

Maybe the power connector was put on upside down. That is what happens...I've seen it done....
 
it was all plugged in properly, i always take caution when pluging in hardware.
started taking caution when my last cpu burnt out on me for being poorly inserted.

There is nothing wrong with RMA'ing that card. Do it, you have nothing to lose.

If it failed due to a manufacturing defect, they owe you a card. It is up to them to determine that.

it will be a painfull 2 or 3 weeks until i get my card back, gamming will have to be on hiades for now, dont know if i can last, and i really dont want to resort back to diablo 1 :( ,
i just hope the ati RMA centre doesnt screw me over and think of a reason not to fix or replace my card, then shit will definetly hit the fan.
but if all goes well like skystalker xclaims, than there should be no prob.

You have a dead card now, the worst that happens is that you have a dead card later. I doubt that will be the outcome.

Sorry to hear about your loss but I'm hoping you get a good replacement. I really think the 9700 Pro has been one of the best purchases I have ever made. Let us know how the RMA goes.

Your fire reminds me of the time I had the exact same thing happen to a old floppy drive. Plugged in correctly, I started up the PC and smoke start billowing out of the drive. The power wires to the floppy started melting really fast! :eek: I yanked the cord out and was about to cry since this was happening in my brand new pc. I thought I lost everything! I was lucky and the only thing that I lost was that power cable and the old floppy. The floppy had worked fine for years just it refused to go into my new system.
 
ok now im confused, i shipped out my 9700pro for an rma about 10 days ago, and i also have status tracking so i can see where my card is at certain delivery posts, i sent my card to "thornhill ontario" and the status tracker says that my card has been sucesfully delivered to "richmond hill ontario", I hope this is just a place it goes to before its delivered to ATI in thornhill, i meen come on... i know both the locations have "hill" in it, but it also has different postal codes. i need some assurance that my package will be alright.
i have e-mailed ATI about this issue, but i dont kow if they can help me, ill have to ask my post office. i dont think i can last another 10 days waiting :( .
now would be a good time for me to get a job and buy a new card so i wouldnt have to deal with this crap lol. :rolleyes:
 
i think i just answered my own question, thornhill is near or in richmond hill ontario, "wipes sweat from forehead",
i'll let u all know when my card arrives.
 
YEAH! about damn time, shipped my card for an RMA and got my new replaced card in 11 days.
the funny thing is ATI says that they should receive my card in 10 days and it may take a while till i get it back, sure if half a day is a while.
my card runs great and for some reason seems to play all my games at a much higher frame rate, maybe my previous card was just shit then.

i think it is safe to say, that ANY video card with smoke coming out of it, has seen it's last days as a gamer...
