So I couldn't afford to upgrade my system just yet but wanted a little better quality in Rome and KOTOR2 ... so I wanted to OC my ATI Radeon 9700 Pro. It was OCing like a wuss (wtf infineon chips) so I took off the heatsink, removed the shim, removedt he TIM, lapped the heatsink, and put some thermal grease on. When I put her in my board, the screen was artifacting like crazy even in the BIOS. 3DMark and ATITool reported some errors when couldnt be read easily through all the artifacts (actually both programs ran once and I even ran Rome, making me think it wasn't a heat problem). I reinstalledt he heat sink a few times, but I noticed my thermal grease got kind of messy. So I cleaned up the silver-covered GPU PCB, put some AS5 on the GPU and installed a VGA Silencer. I still have the problem though. Is this what might happen if I cracked the core? Could the thermal grease have created a capacitive bridge between crap on the PCB? I'm not sure what would happen if those things happened. Any help would be appreciated~
 
Yeah I figured I massacred this little gem, but can you guess exactly how I did it? I'd like not to repeat it heh.
 
You may have just flexed the PCB a bit too much while handling it. I've done it, and I think I cried for a week 'cuz I couldn't blame anyone else.
 
you could have also created an uneven surface on the bottom of the heatsink when you lapped it. It must be perfectly flat to work correctly or only a small fraction of the heatsink is gonna touch the GPU, creating horrible contact.

Yup, I can sympathize there..I killed my rev. 1 9700 pro, with 2.5ns chips, the good samsung ones :) and it was all because the superglue/AS5 mixture was slightly rich, and stuck a little too well...so I ripped off the vGPU voltage regulator...i nearly killed myself. $400 down the drain. Now I have an expensive custom heatsink template. and a new 9700(of course)


I would have to say desultadox, you suffered much the same fate as i did, just a simple mistake. dont worry, now you have an excuse to get a new card :)
 
I cry every time I see another 9700 NP/Pro die :( . They have served many of us so well.

The AS5 is not conductive enough to cause any problems. I have tred to get it to..it wont. You prob cracked the core, or as said above have an uneven surface. Can you see the entire imprent of the gpu on the sink when you remove it?
