I just took off the heatsink on my 9700 pro and first of all it was using the dreaded thermal pad. It was pretty ugly. so after a little bit of scraping and cleanding I had the pad off and a good thin layer of AS on the die.

I did notice that there was a factory installed shim around the outside of the chip.

At first I didn't think too much of it but after I got the heatsink back on there, I just thought that I might check it out and see if the heatsink actually came in contact with the die. So I removed the heatsink again.

Well, there was no contact between the die and the heatsink. I couln't even see any AS on the heatsink.

So after this long winded story, I want to remove that shim. The thing is, it seems to really be firmly attached.

Has anyone else encountered the shim and tried to remove it and how did you do it?

its been done many, many times. Use a really sharp razor knife and be really careful.
