9700 pro or 9800 pro?

Alas, its time for me to get a new video card, since my GF3 is not cutting it anymore. So i pose this question to you all:

Powercolor "Evil Commando" 9700 pro, or an OEM 9800 pro(*edit, the 9800pro is the 128MB card).

Theres not a huge price difference(like $30 from what I can find). Is the extra money worth it for an OEM 9800 Pro, or am I wasting my time? Anyone have any direct experience with the OC-ability of these 2 cards? Im sure some of you do. Thx in adv

id proble say the 9800 if its not hard for you to procure the extra 30 bucks.. the core will usually go 80-100 mhz higher with the same cooling.

im with everyone else, 9800 pro is the best bang for your buck right now. Its a hella nice card and a great overclocker.

i got a sapphire 9800pro oem and it rox... upgraded from a gf3ti200, using nforce2 1600+ 512 2100. system still definitely the bottleneck, but the performance increase with full features hi res is out of control. if you have a system comparable to mine or better, you surely wont be dissapointed with the 9800 pro as compared to the gf3. it really is a world of a difference.

9800pro will give way better core and mem ocs. Even if you run stock I'd say it's worth the extra little bit of cash.

My $.02 :)

The Powercolor 9700 PRO don´t overclock a darn. Their 9800 PRO is a bit better but still a bit below average.

Where I live the 9800 PRO are as cheap as the 9700 PRO:s.

Why not get a 9600 Pro/XT and waiting for the what comes out in the next three/ four months? That sounds better to me.

Well, the reason why that doesn't make sense is because the 9800 Pro is affordable now - you can find then under $230 (USD) if you look hard.

Waiting for the next generation of cards seems to not make sense. If you're waiting for latest and greatest, you probably won't be able to afford it if you won't buy a 9700pro or 9800 pro now.

Do you see what I'm saying?

No I don't but I understand what your talking about. Spending close to $200 right now before a product release is foolish IMO because at the very least the new cards will drive down the price on the older hardware even more. I would expect 9800Pros to start inching there way to that $150 mark withend the next two months because retailors will want to make room for the "next big thing" on their store shelves. Hell I'm starting to see 9800XTs going for $399 right now, I would expect them to drop alittle more as we get closer to a ATI/ Nvidia release dates. So to me waiting a month or two is nothing compared to the price/ performance savings. Right now I'm saving as much as I can for the new GPUs (have about $200 right now).

I disagree. Just 4 weeks ago, most 9800 Pros were $300 and now for only $212 it is currently the best performing card for the money. You say the 9800 pro will drop to $200 in a few months, but already they are $212 shipped and I dont think it will be worth waiting to upgrade because it wont be alot cheaper anytime soon.

Your right about that, I wasn't able to take a look at prices at the moment, what I meant to put was $150, $200 is a good price...not good enough for me right now but want better. ;)

It depends on the price you find for each.
Personally, I just bought an ATi refurbed 9700PRO 128MB for $150.

Unoverclocked, it performs within 5% of the 9800PRO XT according to the benches I've seen. It hasn't arrived yet so I can't say for certain how well it will do.

I am not sure the 9800 PRO:s will drop any further.

Look where the prices on 9700 PRO:s are today? And the prices don´t always reflect the relative performance you get. the R420 will be much more faster than a 9800 PRO is over a 9700 PRO but I ain´t sure the prices will reflect that.

Cross your fingers!! The last refurbed 9700pro I bought doubled as a checkerboard. You never know with refurbs, good luck.

thanks to everyone for all the input. My situation is that I will not be able to afford a new generation card right at release time, so im trying to get the most bang for my buck(which right now is about $200). I had looked at the 9600 line of cards, but I want the full 8 rendering pipelines. So, I'm gonna go for the 9800pro, and cross my fingers and hope that I get one that takes well to overclocking. thanks again for the help

Make sure you get a Sapphire 9800 PRO. Those are priced the same as those PowerColor/Club3D/Connect3D

And Sapphire overclocks like the best of any 9800 PRO:s. Without super fancy cooling

thx for the info. any idea on the regular price of the Sapphire 9800pro on newegg? I have to transfer some funds around and pay some bills before i can make the purchase, so im not gonna make the one day sale

That one day sale is great, the other price is about $225 (Retail package)

The regular price on that when the sale ends should be around $212-214. Some where around there and the retail is about $225. Either way, you'll be getting a great card.
