9700 Pro dual monitors resetting

I have two 21" monitors on a 9700 Pro on XP. I reinstalled XP a couple of weeks ago and since it was a new install I went ahead and added SP 2. I have to say I've not noticed any problems that have been reported with SP2 so far (knock, knock). I then installed the most current (at that time) ATI drivers, that being 6.14.10.6467 dated 8/3/04. Since this new installation when I start my computer the dual monitors have reset back to one and I have to activate and extend the desktop. I can restart, shut down for 5 minutes and come back and it's still there, but when I shut down for the night and come back the next afternoon I have to reactivate the 2nd monitor again. No other settings are lost and on rare occasions it comes up and the dual settings are still there. This has only happened two or three times though. I have 3 ideas of possible problems. SP2, the newer, but not newest drivers or the AGP slot and/or card connectors need to be cleaned. I believe I am going to update to the newest catalyst drivers now and see if it still reverts when I boot up tomarrow evening. This exact same setup was working before I formated and reinstalled Windows, allbeit with an older set of drivers. Any opinions would be appreciated.

I should note that when I boot, I have a duplicate small desktop on each monitor. I set it so the desktop is extended to the other one for one large desktop and when I come back the next day it has reverted to two small duplicate desktops...
