9700 pro artifacts without oc

i just RMA'd my 9700 pro card, and got i got a new one,
for 3 days this new card has been working great, and then all of a sudden i get artifacts in windows and games, i felt the back of my card to see how hot the ram and gpu get, followed by temperature checking progs, no problem there. its acting as if i overclocked the hell out of it, somtimes i cant even start my pc up without getting the dredded one long beeb followed by 3 small beeps,and that ussualy happens when the power connector is not plugged in, im hoping there is just somthing wrong with the agp slot, but im not 100% sure.
any ideas or suggestions.
 
Make sure it is not plugged into the same power lead as your hard drives. If you can give it a seperate lead.
9700's are power hogs and I had problems with mine being on the same lead as my HD's.
 
nope, fan still running, if i uderclock i get a little more life.... maybe about 15 mins of gameplay. maybe it is overheating?, dont know why, especialy when underclocked 300 core 300 ram.
still need help.
 
Definately sounds like overheating, have you made sure that the heatsink is making good contact with the GPU?
 
The 9700pro that i had had serious artifact issues at stock speeds, i can play a game for like 10mins before the whole screen is full of artifacts, in order for the card to be stable, i underclocked the freqs down to 298core and 287mem using atitool. This was using the stock fan which suks, i suggest u buy a new fan (ala arctic sliencer)

does anybody know why it would just start over heating all of a sudden?, like i said before, it worked great for the past 3 days i had it.
i have switched poewr connectors and i checked the heatsink, all seems fine.
 
if i look closely behind my gpu on the back of my card, i see what looks to be burn marks, i cant really tell, could be ink from a maker or stamp that they use at the factory, i just hope that my damn card isnt burnt out, i hate RMA'ing, they better give me a higher end card in replace for this double time.. how do i say... "manufacturing error".
 
They probably sent you a refurb or something. I'd rma it again, if I were you.
 
I had an ECS motherboard that wasnt supplying enough juice to it's AGP slot, and my 9800 was astifacting like a motherfucker. I was seriously distressed until I replaced my motherboard, and everything was peachy.

Just another oppinion/example for you to mull over....
 
It's obviously your heatsink is not making good contact. Take the heatsink off. Clean out the core and reapply heatsink grease. Handle with care. Install the heatsink again.
 
i have great airflow in my case, i have 7 fans running in my pc, but i do think i need a new cooling fan for my card, i took my heatsink off, wiped it clean, added thermal glue and reseated, still no go, but the heat sink does get pretty hot.
tnx for the suggestions, i still gotta try the new mobo idea.
 
It's definitely an heat issue.

Try getting a artic silencer 3 or something.

I have my radeon 9700pro voltmodded and overclocked to 440/340. Pretty much on par with a 9800XT.
 
I would try first of all booting up in safe mode, since you said it gets artifacts in normal, and see if it still does it. Also, Make sure the heatsink it securley on, my brother had his fall off the core twice and start to artifact, things arren't made like they used it :( . It does sound like a heat issue though since it comes after time. Try increasing the airflow through your case.
 
have you taken off the shim around the gpu?? back in the day, I had problems with mine. took a straight razor under it and popped it off...lapped the stock heatsink. no more problems.
