970 Performance Problems

Hi everyone, I've been lurking around the forums for a while now trying to understand what's really going on with my two 970s. The more I research, the more I think something is drastically wrong. The ROPS aren't correct from what I can tell, the Pixel fill rates are extremely low, and I can't even enable the Physics button at the bottom.

I'm coming from two 670's and was hoping to see some real differences with two 970s. I actually do seem to encounter some better game play and smoother experience, but nothing drastic at all. Star wars the old republic is the worst experience, with not even pushing past 500 or so mhz for the core while playing. TDP on all games and benchmarks seems to stick around 60-70 percent and temps never seem to go past 60ish. 3dmark and all other benchmarks are showing scores that just seem completely off to me and are way too low. These are two Gigabyte G1 Gaming 4G btw.

I've tried everything, from disabling SLI, to updating motherboard bios, switching nvidia drivers, changing voltages, changing the monitor input on both cards, changing monitors (to make sure it isn't the ROG Swift causing it), fiddling with every single setting in after burner and the nvidia control panel, and even trying different programs like precision and the stock one for gigabyte.

At this point I've just about had it. I feel completely ripped off with these two cards and I don't completely feel like I received the same product that Nvidia and everyone else is hyping up. Anyone can lend some advice on what's really going on, and if I should even be worried at all? Thanks.

Wow, didn't realize the picture would come out so big, sorry. GPU-z and Afterburner are to the right of the picture.

A few questions. When you play with sli, are both cards being utilized or only one? And if you use only one card does it still only go up to around 500 mhz? Also I assume v-sync is turned off in the games and control panel.

You need to update gpuz, im not sure they have it posted on their website but there is a test build specifically for maxwell that shows the correct hardware specs.

There is also a current bug with sli configs that drops the load voltage of the second card, this can cause voltage based throttling and thus lower than desired performance. Also with firestrike make sure you have vsync disable, and if you have a gsync monitor there are also a few bugs currently being reported.

Id give it time before you make any final judgements, seem to be a bunch of sli issues atm. My single card experience has been nothing but stellar on my G1 and msi 970.

Sli seems to be good when checking the sli indicator. The 500 MHz throttling only happens in swtor, otherwise it seems to be clocking up properly. The monitor I have is a gsync monitor, but I've tried a number of different combinations in the control panel to see what's going on especially with vsync. I will try to download the newer GPU-z. I really feel like returning these thing are my only hope, but I think I will stick it out until some new drivers arive.

OP can you do me 2 favors.

1. Post your specs, mobo/cpu/ram/psu Monitor and resolution.

2. Take and post screenshot with an On Screen Display enabled during a full load 3d mark or heaven 4.0 session.

Make sure GPU 1 & 2 Clocks are displayed, Temps are displayed, Usage are displayed, Voltage are displayed, memory clocks are displayed and FPS are displayed. Try leaving the rest out if possible.

Sometimes I notice that my clocks are around 500mhz and if I close afterburner and re-launch it then I get my 1520mhz in games. It seems like some kind of bug. What I do now is launch a game with on screen displayed enabled to make sure my clocks are 1521 and then disable my On screen Display. I notice that on screen display running for too long will crash or freeze many of the games I play.

I also agree with RV8000 above. There are about 6 different versions of GPU-Z .079 and you need the newer one that has the PhysX checked off. It also has the ability to better read and detect Maxwell 2.0 GPUs

I might have some advice for you depending on what I see from the screenshot.
