I was given a new problem child this afternoon that I could use some guidance with. It's a windows box that is used as storage for an NVR. Has a 7 disk Raid5 array currently up and running that is approaching capacity. Can a Raid5 array be expanded on this card by adding 5 additional drives and can it be done in windows with the array still in use?
 
Not sure why I posted before putting forth even a basic effort on google but I quickly ran across the 3DM2 application that seems to be able to handle this no problem. Thanks for confirming it.
 
What size drives are you currently running? If the video is important (and you don't do backups often,) do yourself a big favor and migrate to RAID6 while you do the rest of the updates. 12 drive R5 is just asking for trouble, especially for large drives and with less than 24/7 monitoring and service.
 
The drives are 3TB WD "purple." I think I'm going to also take the RAID 6 advice as well but am I going to see a sizable performance hit during the migration if I'm both adding 5 disks and the second parity stripe at the same time?
 
No feedback about the performance hit during an OCE migration?
 
The performance hit will be dependent on first which card you have and then what you have your background utilization set to. Set it high and it will be more severe and take less time and set it low and the results will be reversed. Generally you will do the raid migration first then do the capacity expansion second, but there is nothing forcing you to do it in that order. It is usually done that way to get you to double parity ASAP and then expand.
