ok well i've recently been looking into home theater audio for my new computer and am now wondering: what difference will i notice between the two cards when i play video games i know that benchmarks show a huge difference, but consider that i will be playing Half Life 2 and Doom 3, but not many other games which (currently) demand too much of graphics cards...

they're both DX9 cards right? i'd love to have a card which lets me turn everything on in the new half life, but i'll be happy with a card which gives me playability without having to turn off all of the effects of the card, does that make sense? i may be babbling...

anyhow yeha i was just wondering, besides pure speed, what are the reasons to buy a 9800 vs a 9600...btw i am happy playing my games at 1024x768, and currently i'm using a generic dell geforce 2 gts w/ 64 mb ram so keep that in mind...

btw: do i only get the HL2 coupon when i buy bbati xt?

if you want to play HL2 with everything turned on, I suggest you wait until it is actually released, and buy the best video card THEN. However, if you must buy a video card now, you'll be able to crank up the eye candy much more with the 9800, it's a good deal faster.

9800pro will DEFINITLY out perform the 9600XT at your resolutions hands down. 9800pro doesn't just give higher frame rates at higher Res's, 8 vs 4 pipeline structure makes a huge difference. Cost wise? Thats a personal issue, I wen't with a 9800pro a couple months ago after I fried my new FX5900 Ultra, I love it, great card for any game.

switching to lower 9600 in my rig i have proposed now would save me 76 dollars, so i'm not sure if its worth it.

i was just thinking that between the computer and (possibly) home theater is going to cost me a fortune :(

home theatres are a waste of money because you can never fully utilize it like you can a computer, unless you are an avid film freak, go to sundance film festival on reserve tickets every year, and produce your own movies.
The only reason i would ever buy one is to connect to my comptuer to play games and music on.

But thats just me.

what you do is buy the 9800 pro for $250, then sell your old card for $50;)

i meant to say home theater audio. a home theater reciever and book shelf speakers are much better than a standard multimedia sound system.

the purpose of my home theater audio is to play music and video games, and maybe watch a couple of DVDs, but not many...i'm hardly an audiophile tho, so i won't have to spend TOO much on it hopefully...

9800 pro or if you want to spend only around 219 bucks search newegg.com for powercolor 9700 pro.. damn that is one sweet deal! :D

its should be more like, 5900SE or 9800pro, dont waste your money on a 9600 card.

i heard powercolor is unreliable...i'd rather go w/ a solid card which i can overclock in a year or so when its outdated

powercolor is not unreliable anymore.. most of their cards are now pretty much what you get from ATi.. but it is your call.. the card I am referring to is based off a 9800 pro pcb and seems to have potential.. plus you get a retail box and i think 1 year warranty..

as far as unreliable powercolor cards are concerned.. that was with their stupid evil commando and evil commando 2 series earlier cards that had cheaper memory etc.. and lower than reference clock speeds

the newegg.com card has the right memory (or so I have heard) the decision ofcourse lies with you..

and yes the 5900 NU is also worth a look and can be had for 184 smacks from zipzoomfly.com though I haven't gotten anything from there!

so what i'm hearing now is to just buy the 9800 pro...any other suggestions?

i do not want to buy cooling and overclock a np myself...so please don't suggest it

I vote you get a 9800 pro, and eat some instant noodles for a few weeks. I'm sure it will last you at least until 2005 ;) I know I won't be buying a video card this year.
