Which do you think is better, the 9600XT or the 5900nu? I have hears bad things about ATI's drivers (compatability problems). Could you please comment on the performance of these two cards and the compatibility of their drivers. Also, which card brand do you think is the best (is Sapphire a brand or what)?

ATI had a bad reputation in the past for their drivers, however were talking years ago (around the 8500 series and lower).

ATI actually IMO, has better drivers now than Nvidia.

Sapphire is a good choice, used their cards in the past and have been very pleased, powercolor as well, both these brands are well priced.

I just picked up the 9600XT with the HL2 ticket at the local Computer store, the thing is sweet!

Nvidia

For the money, and I have been pimping this thing all day, I would go for the 5900nu. You will get better DX9 performance than the 9600s, and DX8 performance on par with the 9800s. As an alternative to the 9600 the 5900nu is the better option (my opinion of course.) Of course, the when comparing to the 9800, you would be crazy to settle on the 5900nu.

This competition isn't even remotely close. 5900NU by a long shot. As far as drivers go, yes ATI drivers have come a long way and may be just as good as NVIDIA, but I see far more people complaining about games crashing or problems with ATI drivers than I do with NVIDIA drivers. The complaints I tend to see with NVIDIA drivers are their "cheating" in 3dmark2k3, and the stuff they can leave behind when uninstalling. Not really much about game incompatibilities so long as you only use the 50+ series for FX cards.

5900nu needs to pick one someone its own size and see what happens, bullyin around the poor little 9600's. tsk tsk tsk

It does seem a little unfair doesn't it. Oh well, given the prices, who else is he gonna bully.

Tell NVIDIA to raise their prices :p

Yeah right, I hope to get my hands on one of these soon. The last thing I want is to pay more. ATI would love it I'm sure.

Yes I will admit the card does have a great price especially with how far it is able to overclock.

5900nu all the way. BFG 5900's seem to have very little problems hitting 5950 speeds. The 5950 flash hack alot of people are using seem to work with BFG cards especially well. you can find BFG 5900nu's on pricewatch for $174 shipped now. Helluva deal for a really nice card .

5900 pawns the pos 9600xt. How often do you get to say that for a nVidia video card but it´s nevertheless true :D

o LOL sorry...this guy posted this in September LOL.

i just bought the 9600xt but for the price quoted above it appears the 5900 is a better card.

5900nu.

Does the 9600XT still come with the vaporware voucher?

ingame benchmarks for the 9800xt have been higher in games, not to mention full support for all shaders (such as in halo),
but still the 5900 is a really good card also (not to mention looks better) but so far ahead IMO i think the 9800xt is in the lead, and i am not a fanboy i enjoy both products from nvidia and ati, without them we would have fricken altec lansing trying to make a video card,, do u want that!! huh! do ya!!..

Well considering the 9800XT costs 2x as much as a 5900NU I would hope it beats it. However, the original poster asked about the 9600XT which gets owned if ever benchmark by the 5900NU.

If you are willing to pay $50 extra I think.
