My buddy went to a computer show yesterday and bought a "powered by Ati" 9600xt 256mb for $200. I called him tonight and he is saying Rage is showing the clock at 325mhz. Shouldn't this be 500?

Did he get smoked?

He got ripped twice, the card should be 500mhz AND only cost him about $130 now, not $200 for 325mhz.

Now he tells me he is having all kind of texture tearing in games. His 3dmark01 score is 8800 as well.

Definate ripoff!

Powered by ATI and built by what? And whats the speed of RAM? Tell him to use ATI tool and get the both readings.

Well he took it back to the show today and had to be escorted out of the building. Seems they have fine print on the receipt about a 20% restocking fee. Fvckin Bastards! Oh, and he payed 170.00 not 200.00. Still a ripoff price for an XT but even worse buying a straight 9600 (non pro and non XT)

The companys name is Compusoft and they are out of Ohio. Whats interesting is I can find no info on them on the net whatsoever.

I havent been to a computer show since 2001. That was the last one I will ever attend!

A little advice if you want to live longer :D . "Never buy anything at the first site. Always do your research before buying and think twice (even though the retailers tells you not to think twice) about your decision before you do it".

Wow, that really sucks. He paid too much even if he got what was advertised, and then to not even receive that is a major kick in the balls. He should find out all he can about the company and raise absolute hell. If he had 170 dollars to spend he could have gotten a LOT more power, especially if he just added 20 bucks to that.

Find out about the company - Check the receipt for address/phone/name of company (maybe its spelled slightly different than Compusoft) If the computer show was still around (I assume it was a weekend thing) then some more concrete info could have been attained by the people working there. Actually, if he can speak to the people who held the event he might be able to find more about them.

Also find out more about the card - if there is concrete physical evidence that the card is not as it was advertised, then his case becomes a lot stronger. I mean, for one example, if the model number is printed differently on the PCB than on the box.

Get the Better Business Bureau involved. http://www.bbb.org/

Good luck.

And if nothing happens where you get your money back in full, i'd still recommend returning it and having him save the money for later. At the very least the company won't have stolen all his money, and he'll be able to buy something better now, or later with the 136$ leftover.

What pisses me off is he had to save money to get this. He was saving for a 256mb 9800Pro or XT. Well the show comes along and he thinks he will get a helluva deal on something. ( A couple years ago he was with me when I got an awesome deal on a Radeon 8500 at a computer show )

I can't beleive there are bastards out there like this. People that don't know any better buy these cards and get burned. People who figure it out and return it lose as well.

its underclocked, tell him to OC it, thats why it tears.

When I wanted to keep my Radeon 9800 XT cool while I turned the fan off and went to bed, I would underclock it so it wouldn't heat up. Occasionaly when I underclocked to far, it would begin to start tearing the graphics and such, real pain in the ass. If he can't OC it successfully, then he got a rip.
