9600XT + Sims 2 = Restart

Hey guys, I gave my old rig to my sister mainly cuz she plays Sims 2 on it.. it was working fine but just today the computer started randomly restarting when you load up Sims 2. It sometimes gets a VPU recover error to. The specs are:

Athlon XP 2500+
512MB DDR400
Asus 9600XT
Soltek 75FRN2-L
Antec Smartpower 400W (I suspect this to be the problem)

2 of the rails on the power supply catch my attention.

12V @ 11.69V
3.3V @ 2.9V

This power supply has sometimes dipped to 11.3V in cold weather, I've always wanted to replace but it never gave me problems. I assume this would be the problem but do you guys have any other ideas?
 
I haven't heard of this happening w/ 512mb, but maybe you are running out of ram. I have this sort of thing happen to me (well, had) on my old comp when I started up CS:S or WoW. The only part of my computer that is under the min. specs for wow is the ram. Course, maybe that's causing the psu to have problems in my comp too. I have a 350w.

I'm not too worried about my own situation anymore b/c my entire computer won't post anymore, so I'm getting a new one.

Try going with a psu that has higher tolerancing and more wattage.
 
That PSU looks like it could be the problem. Have you tried running ATI tool, just to make sure that the videocard isn't fucking up in some way? Try using another PSU, and see if you can duplicate the problem.

On another note, the Sims 2 is a beast of a game - I doubt that anyone would have a terribly good gaming experience playing that particular game on that rig. I know that my 2600+ with 1GB of RAM and a 9700Pro was choppy as anything when my gf was playing it.
 
She seems to be happy with it... this does give me a reason to grab an Antec Neopower for myself and give my 380 Trupower to her though :D
 
It sounds like the infamous "loop error." Unfortunately, the loop error can be caused by a multitude of things. I was getting the same thing (only in normal desktop use) at one point. I think my problem was overheating, but it could have been a lot of things. The loop error is when the gpu and cpu mess up in their communication, and the cpu goes into an infinite loop trying to send something. Your computer helps you along by restarting automatically.
