9600XT Problems

Bought the 9600XT and updated all Drivers on my system, including newest Catalyst...now all games will Freeze up after a Random Period of time, the speakers chirp then the entire system is locked up, I'm planning on Upgrading to a AMD 2500 and new nForce2 board this week.

Right now I'm running AMD 750, with 512 SD RAM...yes it sux...

Question is: Is this a problem with the Card Itself...i.e. Overheating or is it just the general suckiness of my system, and should be fixed with a processor to match the power of the card?

Thanx

Also, I've formatted before I installed it, to clean up the Geforce Drivers. So the system is clean.

I suppose you have dx9b installed...so is your card overclocked?

almost sounds like a heat issue, so you may want to take your card out, check the HSF to make sure it's got good contact. If you're willing, take it off, clean it real good, put AS3 or AS5 (or your fav thermal paste) on the die and re-attach hsf.

most of the cards have a relatively flimsy mechanism for holding the hsf on the card...two pins is a cheap ass way to hold on one of the more important pieces of the card.

Its not overclocked, at the moment.

I thought it might have been a Voltage issue, so I gave the AGP slot a bit more juice, but it made no difference.

I'll try to clean the hsf now, we'll see.

Thanx

I have a Sapphire 9600xt and it's hsf wasn't making good contact. it was good enough to run stock, but a good cleaning and some good thermal paste allowed me to get to 600 on stock voltage. I run it at 575 though most of the time 'cause I haven't changed out the stock hsf.

Actually, you're putting too much voltage to your 9600XT card. That card will only work in a 1.5V (AGP4x) or an 0.8V (AGP8x) AGP slot - but your AMD750 chipset-based motherboard only supports 3.3V (AGP2x) AGP operation. The excessive voltage supplied to the card can cause stability problems and/or premature failure of your videocard.

And don't try to get any of the DX9-generation cards to work reliably, if at all, with that older system. Their GPUs only know 1.5V and 0.8V operation, as well. The best card that you can use reliably in that older system is the GF3 on the nVidia side and the R9500/9100/9200 (non-SE) on the ATI side. All of those are of the previous DX8/DX8.1 generation.

Many thanx, I had just discovered this for myself, so I advanced the order on my new nForce2 Board, and my 2800+ so smooth sailing should start Wednesday.
