9600xt/pro vs. 9800se

out of these cards, what is the best performer at stock? oc'd? and is there a big enogh diff. between the 9600xt/pro too be worth the extra cash?

The 9600 XT is easily the fastest of the bunch, but even a 9600 Pro would be faster than a 9800SE. IIRC, about 25% faster at stock.

The 9600s are also MUCH better overclockers.
 
If you can unlock the other four pipes on the SE, it will of course be much faster, but if you can't, the 9600XT will be the fastest.
 
9600 xt at stock some 9800 se users can unlock the other 4 pipes via making it the best of the 3 but since you want stock get a 9600 xt
 
a powercolor 9800se 256bit, would be a better performer than a 9600xt right??

id think that would be your best bet, correct me if im wrong

Yes. Not that it's a hard thing to do. I have a 9600pro and I have never been pleased with its performance. Sure the image quality is great. But the performance doesn't even outrun the Geforce 4 ti4600 128 that it replaced due to that card going tits up.

I would have gone for a 9800Pro at the time except I didn't have the $400.00 and needed something.

9600Pro < 9800SE < 9600XT < 9700Pro < 9800np, etc
9800SE is definately faster than 9600Pro but slower than 9600XT, n 9800SE can o/c well, much higher than 9800np.

n best of all if the mod works, u can get 6K+ on 3dmark03 with xp2500+. i almost got 6K with duron 1600.

6k with a duron 1600..... wow. My 9800se should be here tomorrow, cant wait.

Well, Tom's is talking out of its ass, again.

I have had both a 9800SE and a Radeon 9600 Pro (not an XT, though).

In 3dMark - same exact system, same exact drivers, these are the scores I got:
9800SE
4072 (03)
14,183 (2001)
Max clocks: 398/257

9600 Pro
4339 (03)
15,609 (2001)
Max clocks: 530/361

Keep in mind that's an early release 9600 Pro, there. A 9600XT would be MUCH higher.

I also lucked out and got a 9800SE that could enable all 8 pipes. It was one of the cards that had the memory lined up or something, though - couldn't get 256-bit memory access, period.

Finally....I mean, seriously, even THINKING the 9800SE could clock higher than a 9600 is ridiculous! It's a .15u design! It can't possibly clock as high as a .13u core - just not gonna happen.

i didn't say 9800se could o/c higher than 9600watever, i said it can o/c higher than 9800np. read

its too bad that u were dumb enough to get 128bit 9800se but most 9800se are 256bit now days, clearly stated on the box. i dont think u can buy 128bit 9800se anymore.. n they also have 9800pcb instead 9700pcb like old ones.

even UR scores are similar with 128bit 9800se n 9600pro, but 256bit 9800se is faster than 9600pro which is the one Tom used in his video card comparision with about 25-30 diff cards.
 
I hadn't realized ATI had changed what a 9800SE was. Back when I had bought this one, there was no such thing as a 256-bit 9800SE. The 9800SEs were all 4-pipes, 128-bit. Some had the 'L-shaped' memory (9700 PCB) and could be modded to 256-bit. Almost all could be modded to 8-pipe, but that was it.

If ATI has changed the 9800SE to be 4-pipe/256-bit instead of 4-pipe/128-bit, then good for them. The 'old' 9800SE was a fetid, stinking, turd of a graphics card.
 
I did some research on this one. Read the customer comments on the vid cards at Newegg. The smart buyer gets the card that has the 256bit interface, has the proper alignment, and is already clocked to the same speed of a full 9800 pro. Most of the buyers of said card were able to unlock the other pipes, and got speeds commensurate with the full 9800 pro. For under 200, it's the best thing going if you like to gamble a little. If you don't get lucky, you can still ebay the damn thing and try again or whatever. The mod isn't permanent to try and enable the other 4 pipes, unless you do the bios flash, and even that can be reversed. Sure the 9600XT runs higher clocks, but being stuck at 128bit means you aren't EVER going to see the big numbers, period. I'm not knocking the card, hell, I have a 9500pro doing all it can ( I have it running the same clocks as a 9700pro). I'm STILL only turning a 4000 on 3dmark2003 with a 2500+ running at 2.2Ghz. <shrug>
