9600xt Fan Problem

So the heatsink/fan on my 9600xt recently died, and figuring it was the fan that was dead, I purchased an "ARCTIC COOLING ATI silencer 2 ARCTIC Ceramic Bearing VGA Cooler for ATI 9600 (Pro, XT) - Retail" from Newegg. Link

Well I installed the new heatsink/fan and this fan isn't turning on either, so it leads me to belive it's the power supply coming from the card itself that is dead. The card still works fine, it just gets really hot.

So my question is, does anyone know either the voltage requirements of the fan? Or the voltage that is supposed to be coming out of the 2 pin connector on the card?

Instead of buying a new card, I figured I would just splice some cables and give the fan power from somewhere else.

Any help is appreciated, thanks.
 
from what I understood on my 9600xt, the fan was connected to a pwm circuit. The fan should be getting a 12v source also.
 
so if it was on a PWM circuit, was the video card controlling the speed of the fan?

If so I guess it doesn't matter too much, I can always add a potentiometer... or maybe just leave it full blast all the time if the vga silencer is truely as quiet as it claims.

I think the video card did control the fan. Some models had it some didn't, it was part of the "overdrive" and temperature monitoring features that some 9600xt's had. My card didn't originally have it, but all that was needed was 2 caps, an lm63 chip, and a bios flash.

I replaced my fan with a custom heatsink/fan setup with a 60mm fan and just fed it 7v. Never got hot enough to justify more. Chances are, with that silencer you'd have a similar situation since the 9600xt's didn't get too hot to begin with.

If it were my card, I'd feed the fan a 12v line with a pot just in case. You may not need it, but it'll be there in case you do.
