Just installed my 9800PRO (Newegg, Sapphire)!!!! Had to wait a week with it in my possession but I had to travel out of town.. Talk about chomping at the bit to get home and play.

I've installed the Omega 4.2 Drivers complete with RadLinker. I haven't changed any settings what-so-ever (clock speed, ram speed, AF, AA). In Raven Sheild, i didn't really see any difference from my 9600XT to the 9800Pro... I'm running it in 1280x1024x32, and am around 45 fps... VSync is off in the control panel. On Flight Sim 2004, It didn't really change either... It DID bump up (a little) on UT2004 Demo. I used Driver Cleaner to get rid of anything from my old GF2 and 9600XT.

I was hoping for more of an improvement from the 9600XT to the 9800PRO, especially after reading all the posts on this forum. Something I'm missing?

Also, what kinds of speeds are you getting on the card with stock heatsink? Just curious as I would like to bump up the Clock and Ram speed a bit. VGA Silencer is next on the list. ;)

Thanks in advance!!!

Those games are CPU intensive games and your CPU isn't very good. You should build a new RIG for the 9800 or just leave the 9600 in that computer.

Can't afford a new rig right now.. I have to pay for a wedding this fall...... Already returned the 9600XT... Oh well, I'll just wait till I can build a new rig.

have you tried overclocking the cpu??? I've never had a 1.8, but I would think that with decent cooling you could get that cpu to do 2.0 + easily. Probably 2.1 or 2.2 would give you a boost. Or, just pick up a new cpu, a 2.4Ghz northwood is around the $150's....just don't buy as many flowers :p

its your rig bottlenecking the crap outta the 9800 Pro.. overclock that cpu dammit!

I don't have many options on my MOBO.... kinda crappy. Intel chipset, and in the bios, there aren't any options for multiplier and stuff.... any other ideas?

what brand? Intel chipsets (for the most part) are pretty good. If it's an Intel MOTHERBOARD, however, it won't support overclocking.

Going from 9600XT to 9800 Pro was a worthwhile upgrade on my machine... I'm only running a 2500+.

a 2500+ is more than enough to prevent bottlenecking

Ask your sefl the real question: Is it worth it?
45 frames with all options tweaked/maxed is GOOD.
why compete with people you will never see in real life.

I mean if push come to shove do this ..dont get a new rig, get a new processor.determine that max fsb that your mobo can handle and get a proc that can fit the bill.

I think what he's saying though is that he can't raise the FSB...this no overclocking capability. Of course, the same applies...he could simply get a new board...

a p4p800-d goes for a little over $100 now...as well as an IC7(non-G), AI7, etc...for about 100$ he could get a substantial upgrade with a generally faster board with the ability to overclock that 1.8 he's got.

EDIT: Oops, just looked at his setup again...he'd need new ram too...so add about $150-200 for some decent ram at 512mb.

I understand what you're saying about "competing", but I do FS2004, which when it looks good is pretty taxing on the ole P4... I'm only getting 12-25fps... kinda choppy. And yeah, I wouldn't get a whole new machine, just MOBO, Ram, and Processor... I think I'm pretty good with everything else. I'm considering Athlon XP2700 Barton Core.. with 512 PC2700.... Quite a bit of improvement, or should I really spring for something like a P4 2.8/3.0? I know this is going to start all kinds of stuff, but would like an outside opinion on the new investment....

Thanks for the info, and thanks in advance!

Didn't really answer my question, although that looks pretty good, (gotta love newegg)... is a 2700 a pretty big improvement over what i have, and will i "outgrow" it in the near future? Alot of ppl are going with the P4's now....

Thanks

That 2700 is NOT a Barton. It runs at 333 FSB but only has 256Kb of cache as opposed to a Bartons 512Kb.

Bartons:2500,2600,2800,3000+. Pick one of those. Performance in games lean towards the AMD. My 2800+Barton is overclocked on stock cooling at 2.3Ghz(over a 3200+ rating.) It beats any P4 up to 3.2 with no problem and is quite cheap compared to the P4 counter part.

Whomever told you that P4's seem the way to go is way out of line. Most here have XP's and A64's from what I have seen.

Get a Barton, be happy. And no, you won't out grow it for a year or 2.

Sorry bout that.. was cornfused for a sec... I'm looking at the 2800 Barton (for sure this time) and the Asus A7N8X-X MoBo... whaddaya think?

Thanks again!

you could always get a new 3.0C and o/c it to around 3.7Ghz. I see a LOT of people hitting that 3.7Ghz mark on air. Higher with water.

3.0C is around $220.

Cfetter, if you're going to go Athlon (which I suggest), get the 2500+ instead of the 2800+. You can overclock the 2500+ VERY easily to 3200+ speeds all for around 90 dollars. Don't spend extra for the 2800+ which will get you no further.

Then again, the FSB overclocking might be locked on the new Bartons. I'm not sure. Anyone have an answer?

I'd have to recommend getting an XP-M (mobile) if you're buying an AMD processor right now. They overclock insanely higher than the desktop XP's, and fit in the standard Socket A motherboards. Plus their multipliers are not locked.

What the hell? XT is better than Pro, even if slightly.

He's talking about his 9600XT vs. his 128mb 9800 Pro. Note that 9800>9600.

I would get a Mobile Barton 2400+, a DFI Ultra Infinity, some good PC3200 or PC3500 ram, and a good heatsink w/ fan. Oc that 2400+ to 2.4-2.8GHz and that bottleneck will be gone.

Get either a Athlon XP 2500+ "Barton" for $80
or a Athlon Mobile-XP 2400+ "Barton" for $77
with either a DFI Infinity or an Abit NF7-S motherboard both are about ~$100 each. I've seen a few people here with some of this memory and it seems to work pretty well for them, infact I'm going to have to pick up some next month. You'll want to get a quality Heatsink for that mobile though (they look to be going as high as 2.5Mhz on air) I would suggest getting a Thermalright SLK-947U with either a 80mm Panaflo or a Coolermaster. If you want to save a few bucks I'd try and find a Thermalright ALX-800, they go for about ~$25 and have pretty good performance (review 1, 2)

This is what I'd get:
Mobile 2400+ -$77.00
Abit NF7-S -$101.99
Kreton Blitz Extreme 512mb (256 x2) memory -$98
Thermalright SLK-947U -$39.99
Total= $316.98

I'm in the same boat as you, sucks having one of the shitty p4's :(

Also, even if I keep my PC800 RDRAM, would I still get a good performance boost with a p4 2.8ghz 533mhz FSB?

I know I'd get much better performance with PC1066, but, that is kind of expensive.
