9600pro fan dieing

The fan on my brothers 9600pro seems like it is on its dieing breaths, it is making a whole lot of noise. I was wondering if the card would be ok to run if I just unplugged the fan, I know the 9600pro AIW has a fanless design. My brothers case however doesn't have the greatest airflow.

Does anyone know what the problem with the fan might be, and how to quiet it down. Or should I tell him to get one of the zalman vga coolers (he would probably have to wait until I got back from school this summer and have me install it however...which is why I want to know about him unplugging the fan).

Does the 9600pro come with a temperature sensor? If so what program should I tell him to get so that he can monitor temps to make sure they dont get too high (this would be if he unplugs the fan and tries to run it passively).

Any help, insight, or advice would be greatly appreciated thanks.
