All,

I had to get a nice new shiny toy for my rig, so i got an XFX 9600GT OC. I have a MSI 975X platinum mobo (yes, i know that the pcie slots go 8x when both are in use) and am not looking to do SLI. I also just happen to have 2 of those soyo 24" monitors, and another 24" samsung. Well, it'd seem that the 174 drivers from nvidia ONLY support the 9600, but not the 7900... Can't go backwards either as the 174's are the first/only drivers to support the 9600. Has anyone gotten a pair of cards to coexist yet?

System Specs:
C2D E6400
4GB PC-6400 Corsair XMS2
MSI 975X Platinum v2
XFX 9600GT OC in PCIe slot 1
PNY 7900GS in PCIe slot 2
Windows XP Pro SP2
3x Seagate 320gb
700w Thermaltake
Antec Nine Hundred

Anyone figured this out yet? I can either get the 9600 to work great, or the 7900 to work great, never both at the same time. nv4_disp bluescreens on me if i try to force the 174 drivers upon the 7900.

They have to be the same GPU to SLI, but just to run Dual Monitors Im not so sure.. Curious..

It should be fine in Windows XP (obviously not for SLI, but dual monitors will work). Vista it won't work due to driver model limitations (you need two cards from the same series)

Two cards from either ATI or Nvidia. Does not have to be the same series.

Well, the modified drivers from guru3d recognise both cards, both cards install fine, but as soon as i activate the 2 soyo monitors on the 7900gs, the system hangs, and nv_disp causes a BSOD, same song and dance.

Now i'm beyond the date of returning the 9600GT, so i'm kinda stuck with it, not to mention my dreams of tri-monitors fading... :(

Could it have something to do with my motherboard? the MSI 975X powerup edition says it's designed for crossfire. When both PCIe slots are in use, does it try to do crossfire no matter what? (Even though they're not ATi cards?) I didn't find anything about crossfire in the BIOS.

From personal experience...

- download the latest general driver package from nVidia
- with only the 7900GS in the system, uninstall all nVidia video card drivers
- reboot
- install the latest nVidia video card drivers
- reboot
- make sure the card is working as it should
- shut system down
- unplug power cord
- press power button once to dissipate the capacitors on the motherboard
- install 9600 GT
- power up system
- let the system detect 9600 GT
- reboot

Never has failed using this method.

I'll take a screencap of my test system (when I get home) which is currently running a 8600 GTS 256MB and a 6600 256MB with three monitors.
