Based on what I've learned in the last couple of days, this card would probably slow you down more than anything. If this is all you can get for a stand-alone PhysX card, you're probably better off just letting the 460 handle it for now until you can get something that has more processor streams.
 
I don't know but I am stealing that for the hot deals forum.
 
I used a 9600 GT (64 shaders) to test dedicated physx quite a while ago and I had pretty good results, I couldn't tell you from a performance standard because I wasn't testing that, but it played games perfectly acceptably. I honestly don't know for sure how well this would work because I'm not an expert on the intricacies of physx.... nor do I care as I decided physx was essentially irrelevant hype.

After playing around with my setup for a day, I would have to say that Batman is really the ONLY game I have that's worth enabling PhysX. It's an amazing example of how much of a visual impact this feature can bring to the table if it's done right.

The only problem is, it's hard to justify buying a stand alone card for just one or a few games. If it wasn't for the fact that I already had this spare nVidia card laying around, I don't think I'd ever spend the bucks for it.

Exactly my opinion and position. Batman AA was cool with physx but what else is there, really? Mirror's Edge? PFFT. I couldn't find an excuse to keep a card in my system dedicated to physx, and I tried to make up a reason because I have a bunch of NV cards laying around (GTS 250, GTX 260, GTX 275, and others) that I want to put to some use.
 
I've read in places to make sure your physX card has at least 512mb of ram. GTX200 cards and Fermi GTX 400 cards run physX much better than the older 9800GTX/8800GTX series cards.

Some sites post dedicated physX results when they review a videocard, I believe Anantech does as well as others.

Mafia 2 is probably the best example of PhysX when you run a dedicated card. Nice results with Nvidia hardware when you do that.
 
a 48sp 9600gso for dedicated physx is not going to be much better in most cases than just letting the gtx460 do both graphics and physx.

Some of the DDR3 versions of the 9600GSO might come near to a 9600GT, but the DDR2 is quite a nerf on normal video card performance. But is DDR2 vs DDR3 meaningful for PhysX?
 
Try to find 96SP GSO instead. It's much better for physics than 9600gt or that 48SP GSO.
 
Honestly, I wouldn't go below an 8800/9800GT for PhysX, otherwise the GPUs in these things will slow the game down too much.

I doubt it. If I remember correctly it isn't as big of an issue. (doesn't require the bandwidth as much as the processing power).
