hey currently i have a ti4200, i play games like cs and wolf fine but im looking for a cheap upgrade so i can play bf2, cod2, cod, etc. I've talked to a guy where i can get a 9600 pro pretty cheap ($45 shipped) and im going to overclock it to hell and use it for the current gen of games. will it play bf2, cod2 etc fine? reason im looking for something so cheap, is i want to get a final upgrade for my old agp + 754 comp - then my next upgrade, once the next gen of games comes out, im gonna do a full upgrade to 939 + pci-e. is this a good idea?

Definitely wouldn't recommend this upgrade, as it is not much of one. This from a guy that owns a 9600xt.

4200 was a real good dx8 card. For a few bucks extra, you might be able to find a 9700 pro, which would make it worth your while. I just don't think you'll get the performance you want out of the upgrade you have in mind

basically im looking for a cheap card to squeeze the most power out of my current comp, so i can play this gen of games reasonably well (cod2,bf2) then like i said, with more money saved up, ill go all out on my next upgrade. Though whats specially wrong with the 9600 pro? I mean if i have to i guess i'll shell out cash for something better.. why 9700?

the 9600p has half the power of the 9700.

9600 pro: 400mhz core, 4 pixel pipes, no vertex shaders. 600mhz, 128bit memory. 1600 mpixel/sec fillrate, 9.6gb/s bandwidth

9700 pro: 325mhz core, 8 pixel pipes. 4 vertex shaders. 620mhz, 256bit memory. 2600 mpixel/sec fillrate, 20gb/sec bandwidth.

9800 pro: 380mhz core, 8 pixel pipes. 4 vertex shaders. 680mhz, 256bit memory. 3040 mpixels/sec, 22gb/sec bandwidth

the 9700pro OWNS the 9600pro, and the 9800 pro is a bit better than the 9700 pro. . at this point in the game, the 9600 is 100% worthless.

damn, thanks for saving me then. how much is a used 97p? a used 98p? is the 98 worth the extra money in my situation?

i dotn know if its worth it but my friend has a 9600 pro and he does run those games, not at the most greatest settings, BF2= medium, Lighting low. And Fear = medium (no shadows).

but 9700 pro or 9800 pro would be better deal.

I have an AIW 9800 pro (in sig) and its frickin' amazing! I've played Doom III and Far Cry so far with no problems and no OC'ing at decent quality settings! Definitly worth it! Not sure how big a step up it is from the 9700 Pro though.

If you absolutely need DX9 compatibility, then go for it. It's going to be more of a lateral upgrade, though, since the two cards perform about the same, overall.

I have some direct experience with this matter.
I just upgraded from a 9800pro which I gave to my brother to replace his 9600pro.
In short, you cannot play F.E.A.R. with a 9600pro. Regardless if it's "supported" or not.
With 640x480 and every single option turned off or to low the game was getting 10-25 fps. Granted his system only had 512mb ram at the time but a 9700/9800pro is the minimum you want to play new games. A 9800pro gave me 25-50 fps at 800x600 medium quality in F.E.A.R. And was decent for Quake 4 too.

pretty much. its not much of an upgrade, and will just give you DX9 compatability. slow DX9 compatability.

the 9600p performs like a ti4200 ?

It's a little better than a ti4200. I owned one of those too.
It can do sm 2.0 and performs well enough in older dx9 games
like HL2 but it's really subpar for the games that have come this year.
Paying 50 bucks for one over your old card at this point is a waste of money.
Even if it's only to hold you over 6 months, get at least a 9700pro class card.
I went from a ti4200 to a 9800pro and it's a huge jump. Although at this point I think even
a 9800pro will only last for another year or so. Next winter when the unreal engine 3 games release, it will probably not meet minimum spec.

correct, like everyone has said consider at least 9700/9800 or maybe a reg. 6600 for an upgrade, i went froma ti4400 to a 9600 non-pro, it wasnt the best move i made, but i was able to oc it to past pro speeds which helped, but it still was a disappointment in the fact that there wasnt a big improvement over my older card
