9600 Pro, slowing down over time?

I bought an ATI 9600 Pro in June 2003.

One of the first things I did with it was run 3dMark01 SE to observe how it improved on my old video card. The numbers were quite impressive compared to a 3dfx Voodoo3.

Just now, I ran 3dmark again and compared the results with the tests from 2003. Somehow my card has dropped in performance by 20 to 50 percent, depending on the particular test!

All three of the shader tests had dropped by 40 to 50 percent, as well as both of the bump mapping tests!
Somehow the High Polygon Count (1 light) lost 5 million triangles/sec (48.4 -> 43.7).

I realize there might be some minor reductions in performance from different driver versions, but could it result in such a drastic drop?

I'm assuming I used the official Cat 3.6-odd drivers then, and Omega drivers based from 4.7 now. My mobo/proc are the same, with the only real hardware change being a soundcard.
I use stock cooling on the vidcard, with the gpu fan getting an air-blast for cleaning every other month.

What's the deal?
