Hi all

I've had my 9600 Pro 128 for about a year and a half, and would just like to know where in the ATI food chain my card sits, specifically compared to the 9700 Pro and 9800 Pro.

Is it between those two cards? What would be the Nvidia comparision? I ask because I am looking to replace it and wonder if a 9800Pro 256 would be better? What is the Nvidia equivilent of the 9800 Pro 256?

no...the 9600pro is way below the 9700np. and Nvidia comparison would be the 5600 series.

a 9600xt is closer to a 9700pro...but only if you overclock the hell out of it...and even then it still falls behind. the nvidia competition would be the 5700 series for the 9600xt.

the nvidia competition for the 9800pro would be the 5900u.

However, if you're upgrading...why not get a 6800 card? Cheaper than the new ATI cards, and faster than the 9800pro. I think the plain 6800 has 12 pipes compared to the 9800pro's 8...not to mention all the other enhancements they've made to the core.

You'll notice a very nice increase in performance with a 9800pro 256 coming from a 9600pro...but you'll crap your pants in the difference between your 9600pro and 6800 series.
 
I thought the 9600 Pro series came out after ther 9700 series and before the 9800 series?

The G6800, or better, the 6800GT would be nice but I live in Canada, so the cost for either card would be prohibitive for now.

the 9600 cards did come out after the 9700's did. But their performance still doesn't match the 9700's. the 9600's were aimed at the "mainstream" market or the "occasional"/"budget" gamer where they'd be find with 4 pipes and a 128-bit memory bus.

hell, if the 9600xt had a 256-bit bus, there'd be a hell of an improvement there b/c they have high clock speeds but are bandwidth starved.

If you're looking for a new card, if you can afford it, get a 9800 series, or at least a 9700. I have a 9600xt and back when I got it, I only paid $140 for it...but I couldn't swing the extra $175 for a 9800pro (but I got lucky and got a very high clocking 9600xt)...but now they're so close in price it'd be almost silly to go for the 9600xt.

not sure what the prices are for new cards up in Canada, but if you check the FS/FT forums here, there's usually a 9800pro for sale b/c they upgraded to a 6800. If they ship to Canada via USPS and say it's a gift, you shouldn't be nailed with any extra charges.
 
Right about now would be a good time to keep an eye on the Hot Deals forum. 9800s should be dropping in price to make way for the new Ati x700s
