9600 pro memory and oc'ing

I have an ATI 9600 Pro 128mb. Using ATITool, I can OC the core to 488mhz (90 over stock), but when I reset the core to default and try to let ATITool find the max mem setting, it instantly can't get a stable clock speed and starts to underclock the memory. If I let it go for a while, the whole screen goes fuzzy, and the memory speed continues to spiral down. I'm afraid to try to raise the memory manually.

Is it possible the ram speed is locked, or is it I just have some really crappy ram on my card? Thanks for any light that can be shed on this for me.

I get the exact same problem with ATITool auto detect. ATITool will downclock my ram until my computer crashes. Raising the memory manually works great though. There's nothing to worry about as long as you don't take it too far. I've got a friend running 370MHz ram on a 9600pro 128mb. He has been for almost a year and there's no problems.

On the other hand, another friend of mine with a 9600pro 256mb can't overclock a single MHz until his graphics will start artifacting.
 
I tried messing with it manually, and it worked great. I got the ram to 328 and the core at 479 stable. Good to know its just the program and not my card.
 
ATI Tool isn't fool-proof, so to speak. :D

A good way to manually test RAM is to run the Mother Nature test in 3DMark03; artifacts generally show up on it quite clearly.
