9600 Pro => 6800XT upgrade performance issues

I just upgraded a PC w/ a A-XP 3000+, 1GB RAM, and 9600 Pro 128MB to a 6800XT to play BF2:SF, AoEIII, and a few others at higher frames/settings. The only problem is there seems to be no or little performance increase. I uninstalled all of the Ogemga ATI drivers and tools before installing the 6800XT and installed the 81.98 NVIDIA drivers and Coolbits. I ran 3DMark05 and got 852. I should be getting ~3300. I am running at the stock clocks and 8x mode is enabled in the bios. Detecting optimal frequencies for the video card clocks and running 3DMark05 adds about about 50 points. Something is wrong here and I can't figure out what.

Run Driver Cleaner...

Or better yet, if you don't mind, reinstall Windows, that helps alot, and gives you a fresh canvas.

Ran Driver Cleaner for ATI, uninstalled 81.98, restarted PC, ran Driver Cleaner for NVIDIA, restarted PC, installed 81.98 drivers, restarted PC, ran 3DMark05...scored ~860.

I guess I will reformat it if there isn't anything else I can do. Should I try older drivers like 81.95?

format and reinstall windows would be best but did you run driver cleaner in safe mode?

I was going too but didn't...I thought F8 was for safe mode but it just loaded Windows normally.

F8 is for the boot menu.

Does your keyboard have an F-Lock button or something to that extent? I know lots of Microsoft and Logitech keyboards have them.

I must not have hit F8 enough/at the right time, but I got into safe mode and ran the cleaner after uninstalling the NVIDIA drivers. Still no change. I didn't bother to run 3DMark all the way through again because I was only getting 1 fps or so through a good part of the 1st scene.

Reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled Windows and installed all of the normal drivers and the NVIDIA 81.98 drivers. Ran 3DMark05, same thing!!!!!!!!!!!!! 853 points.

What's up with this?

hmm intersting, made sure you are using the latest bios and drivers for your motherboard? Shouldn't really make much of a difference if you were getting good 3dmark scores with your 9800 but kinda down to very little now ;). Also hows your in game performance after the format?

I'm using the network and audio drivers that came with the mobo CD. I had not updated the bios. I have not tried any games yet, but I will do that now. The game performance before the reformat was about the same as the 9600 Pro.

seems to me you forgot to install your motherboard drivers, and your cpu drivers, and possibly your video drivers hehe.

It seems to be performing a little under what the 9600 Pro was doing in BF2. The PSU is a 420W Thermaltake PurePower. It can't be right for the 9600 Pro to beat the 6800XT.

have you updated your bios yet?

Make sure to install the Nforce drivers (which contains the AGP drivers) before anything else.

Are your settings the same as before when you ran the 9600PRO, or have you tinkered w/ AA, Resolution, or Image Quality to Performance... that type of stuff.

Same settings. BF2 800x600 on medium settings, no AA. It's my bros PC and he said that he is getting noticeably lower frames with the 6800XT.

Do you have another computer you could try the card in? I dout the card is bad but you might as well check.

I do, but but it is only a AMD 1500+ with a 4x AGP slot. Should I still try it?

For the video card or the mobo? I could not find any upgrade for the 6800XT but I have not updated the bios for the mobo.
