9600/9800 Questions

Okay folks, I am converting back to the ATi side of the house during my new build. However, seeing as how I am kinda stringing the build along (it is more of a continual upgrade), and my current mobo is just about dead, I am being forced into action a tad quicker than expected.

The new system will be 939 A64/ MSI mobo, usual crap to go along with it. My current Video card is an old NVidia LeadTek 4600ti 128MB AGP card. I need to upgrade the card as well, but I have to use it initially. Hence, the AGP mobo.

The question now is... what is the difference between the 9600 and the 9800 series? Are both cards Dx9 compliant, with shaders and all the rest of that kind of stuff? Basically, I am looking for the best bang for my buck, and I'd like to keep the video card under 150 or so. The only games I usually play are HL2 and Diablo2 (old school :)). I would like to run D3 and FarCry, just can't right now due to, well, not being able to meet min spec :).

I know my NVidia cards, and would normally just stick with one of them, but I don't have the cash for a 6xxx AGP card, nor am I upgrading to PCI-E, and the FX line is, at best, crap. As such, and the inherent code bias for ATi cards in HL2, I am returning to this side of the house.

Any advice you all could shed on this question would be most appreciated.

In short, the 9600 and 9800 series are equal in features (and pretty much identical to 9500/9700 aswell, just slightly more optimized HyperZ in the new models).

(well, technically the 9800 has an F-Buffer, which the 9600 lacks, but I don't think the Radeon drivers even support it... there is no software that supports it anyway, so it's not important).

9800 just has a 256-bit bus, where 9600 has 128-bit... And 9800 has more pipelines aswell. But on the other hand the 9600 counters that with higher clockspeeds.
But the 9800s are faster anyway.

Much faster, try and find a 9800, I love mine :D
