960 or 860 drive

Except under very limited circumstances NVMe/PCIe SSDs provide no real-word benefit in desktop systems. Get the 860 Evo.

Careful there. Not all m.2 sockets support SATA m.2 SSDs at all; for example, SATA m.2 SSDs will not work at all if an m.2 socket only supports PCIe. (Conversely, a PCIe m.2 SSD will not even fit an m.2 socket that only supports SATA m.2, like on a few lower-end laptops.) And on some motherboards, the use of even one SATA m.2 SSD will disable all of the other m.2 sockets and/or some of the SATA ports.

Because of those compatibility issues, if one were to buy an 860 EVO for a desktop, he should stick with the 2.5" version.

Fair enough, always consult the mainboard's specs before buying parts for it.

However, there are vanishingly few consumer-level mainboards that don't support SATA on their m.2 slots. It's unlikely that the OP will have a problem with the m.2 860 Evo. Side benefit, no cabling to deal with.
