960 GTX question.

Backstory:
About 3 weeks ago I bought a 960gtx 2gb(Gigabyte windforce 3x G1 gaming) and only got about 2 days use out of it until got an obnoxiously high pitch noise every time the fans would kick on. I RMA'd it to newegg and just received my refund. I was using the 2gb for 1080p gaming on very low impact games (WoW and Dota 2) I was getting very good frame rates as my previous card was a 5870, that has been used a lot and probably should have been retired years ago. All I keep hearing about the 960 is that it is barely suitable for 1080p gaming

Question:
For WoW and Dota2(about 98% of my game time goes into either of these), would a 960GTX 4gb handle the load at high/max settings for 1600p @ >30 fps? I use a 1080p monitor at the moment but have a 1600p monitor being repaired (stupid gateway XHD3000 purchase). the $240 for the 960 is stretching my budget as is so a 970 is out of the question but I bought EVGA ,this time around, so if I do get some extra money within 90 days I could potentially step up to the 970. As I only got to test 1080p for about 2 days and haven't seen any benchmarks for the 4gb model I was hoping that someone who owns one or has tested one has some insight.

When people make those types of statements, especially on forums like this, they are referring to modern high fidelity games (and often with added criteria, max setting and/or near/at 60fps) and not games like Dota 2 or WoW. If you are however looking to play at 1080p with games like AC: Unity with minimal compromise than you basically need a GTX 970 or r9 290 (as this is how the products currently fall) as starting point going forward.

If you found the 5870 already good enough than the GTX 960 will also be (as it is much faster). The 960 will be fine with Dota 2 at 1600p even. I'm not sure with WoW since I'm not really familiar with it and heard some new areas might be more demanding?

However the problem with the GTX 960 is that it really has poor price for what you actually get relative to rest of the products out there.

You might want to wait and see if Nvidia fills something in the large gap between the 960 and 970 or wait for AMD to launch it's next series (even if it does end lacking actual new parts) for more choices.
 
Thanks for the reply. I was thinking that everyone was talking about the newer games out because my wife has a 660gtx (non ti) and it runs wow maxed out at 2k res at or above 60fps consistently. The only reason i am upgrading is that the 5870 just took a dive off a cliff. I was getting decent frames but over the last 2 months it has gptten to the point that i have to play on the lowest possible settings at 1080p and even then I have to underclock the card (to minimum) for the game not to crash.
