9500Pro versus 6600 GT

Right now I have a 9500 Pro, 512mb of RAM, and a XP 2400+.
Would I be better off buying another 512 mb of RAM or upgrading to a 6600GT?
Obviously the RAM would be much cheaper, and I'm not really a graphics whore, I just want to try out Counter Strike Source and 99.9% of my reason for upgrading would be Battlefield 2. I know the exact requirements for Battlefield 2 haven't been revealed, but do you guys think a 9500Pro, 1gig of ram, and a 2400+ could play it somewhat smoothly?
 
I don't know too much about the rumored reqs for BF2 but i've seen some video, I don't know if even a 6600GT will be enough to run it on high with a decent res. If I you have PC3200 ram I would get another stick of ram, if you have something slower, I personally would wait till you can go to Athlon64 and PCI-E graphics. I recommend the ram if you already have PC3200 is cause you can upgrade to Athlon64 much easier later down the road if you need to. So I'd either buy the ram or wait it out.
 
Buy a 6600 GT and find $50.00 worth of stuff that you can sell, then spend the $50.00 on another stick of 512MB.

Or if you can't part with $50.00 of stuff, sell your sperm at the local repository.

Or get your friends to pay you to do something crazy.

Yep, I was planning on building a new computer with a A64 and a 6600GT, but I've come into some money issues (no job is a major one ; ) ) so I was trying to figure out if there was any point in spending $200 on a video card using a 2400+ or just wait for a complete overhaul.
And nope, my RAM isn't PC3200...cheap PC2100 that I got for dirt cheap after rebates...

Does anyone have any comparisons of a 9500Pro running Half Life 2 compared to a 6600 GT as in FPS?
Anyone know what a ATi brand Radeon 9500 Pro is worth :D
 
get a job, save up, get a cool new computer.

With a R520 and dual core Athlon 64 :D
 
well i have a stick of micron 2100 256mb i would sell you for 20 bucks shipped if that would help you make a decision..... :)
 
If you really want an upgrade, you could go with another stick of pc3200(if that's what you have) and then when you have enough money for other things, you can upgrade in a few months and do a revamp of other things, while keeping the RAM throughout. I'm hesitant to advise you to get the 6600gt, since you could use upgrades on several things, and imo your system should work well enough to tide you over until you can upgrade cpu, mobo, and video card, and get a much larger performance increase.

So if you have pc3200 ram, get another stick if you want, then when you can, sell the old parts and use it along with what you've saved to buy all new parts. By then a better bang/buck ratio card than the 6600gt should be out(or you could prolly get an x800xl in a few months for a similar price) and hopefully dual core cpu's should drive the price down on normal ones, which will additionally provide you with a better performance for your money.


Btw, i've found out that odd jobs for people you know can pay well. Just helping a family move into their new house netted me 100$ in one day of 6 hrs of pretty demanding, but fun, box lifting. Also, since you probably know something about comps, you can see if anyone will pay to have you clean up spyware on their comps. I dunno who your friends are, but maybe you can convince them to shell out 20$ for a full clean-up. Doing a couple things each weekend should be able to get you a couple hundred dollars if people need help, and that goes a long way in buying budget parts.
 
if your first stick is 3200, then I would get another stick of ram, that way if you want to upgrade soon you can keep the ram, as ram quality isnt THAT imporantant with a64, but if you get a 6600gt, you will have to replace your video card again(or you will probably want to) for a pcie card later on. Also 1gig of ram is sweet for general usage performance, I love being able to alt-tab out of games.
 
the 6600gt would help you out a lot more than the ram.

so buy 6600gt ... then later on get another 256 or 512 of ram
 
I'd get the 6600GT; I think that the RAM would actually help you more, but if you're planning on upgrading in the next little while you're going to be buying RAM then, anyways, and you can get a dual channel pack to reduce the likelyhood of a RAM conflict. The 6600GT will, however, lock you into an AGP mobo, and while I didn't have any issues with that (I'm using an AGP 6800GT and mobo) it may be something that you want to take into consideration. Also; if you just want to play BF2, wait until the game comes out. Don't bother upgrading now, only to realize when it comes out that you need to do another hardware upgrade to play it at the resolution you desire.
 
I would recommend the 6600gt as well. You should be fine that way for CS. I would imagine though that for BF2 you will need both the card and the RAM.
