My system is getting a little old more my tastes...not bad since I got a lot of the parts for free but I think it's upgrade time :D Here's my current specs:

Celeron D 2.4 GHz
4x256MB DDR400
6800 nu (agp)

Heh, give me a break, all I did was play cs but I may be moving onto BF2 and other games for a bit now. Now, seeing all of the pricedrops that are going to be taking place on the 24th of next month, I think upgrading is going to be a lot easier on my wallet. Keep in mind that it will probably be 2-3 Months before I upgrade.

I was thinking of going AM2 since I don't already have a 939 system and it will be DDR2 ready. However, I wasn't sure whether DDR2 really made that much of a difference. Would I be better just grabbing a 939 system (lot cheaper on the mobo) and getting some tight-timing memory? I'm thinking AM2 since DDR2 is going to last longer which is what I need.

Here is what I was thinking, any suggestions are welcomed :D

AM2 X2 3800+
(Undecided on mobo, probably an asus)
2x1GB DDR2-667
7800GT

Then just overclocking it and putting my current machine to shame.

If you want to really go AMD, I would go with what you put down it seems decent.

However, you could also go the Intel route as they are slashing the prices on their Pentium D's by insane amounts, and the Conroe will come out a day before the AMD price drops. So even if you got a lower end Conroe for $2xx, it would overclock way past what any AMD can do and run cooler at the same time. Pentium D's we all know can overclock well, and with the price drops you can get one for under $200 or even go for an 805 for under $100!

Just my opinion but......

I've been using PCs since a lot of gamers have been walking (1980s) and I've never seen that buying "outdated and cheap" is a good way to spend money in the long run.

I didn't order the fastet AM2 chip or graphics card because I want to wait for Vista/DirectX10 and to see what AMD does with AM2. But I can upgrade an AM2 system for a lot longer than a 939 mobo is going to allow. Gotta remember...the software guys aren't toning down their new products for last years' PCs.

But it's YOUR coins so you make the call. Good luck.

question that is on topic..

besides longevity are there any noticable differences between a

AM64 3800+ Venice vs a AM2 3800+?

yeah like said go with the AM2. It might be a bit more expensive and you will not see hughe gains over the 939 but in the future you would be able to upgrage to newer CPU architecture, that being the K8L
