Buddy of mine has a Athlon 3500+ 2.2GHz that we seem to be having some temp issues with. The fulls specs are as follows:
AMD Athlon 3500+ 2.2GHz "Winchester" CPU-Z
Zalman CNPS7000B-CU 92mm 2 Ball Cooling Fan
DFI LanParty nF4 SLI-DR
1GB Corsair XMS memory
2x 74GB Raptors in RAID0
Windows Server 2008 Standard
Lian Li PC-V800 HTPC case

This PC has been in this case for about 2 years now and just recently, the temps have been creeping up and its worrying. The temps used to be around 50c at idle, and just recently I have seen them at 67c max at idle! Im using SpeedFan and SmartGuardian to monitor the temps and they both read the same thing. Today we took apart the pc and cleaned every part of all the dust and where only able to get the temps down to about 60-61c at idle. Still slightly to high for my tastes. Our next step is to re apply arctic silver 5 and see if that helps as the current AS5 has been on there since the PC was built 3 years ago.... Let me know if you have any recommendations.

I DID say we cleaned the entire PC of dust, but thanks for trying. :D

Sure the fan is still running at the proper speed, and pushing air in the proper direction?

Those idle temps are insane. I have the 3400+ in my laptop and it idles at 30c. I know the thermals are different in laptops but I doubt by much.

My first step would be new thermal paste, espcially if what is on there is the stock paste. I have seen some awful stock thermal past that dried up over the years and just made a layer of what was little more than chalk.

You say you removed the dust from everything, that would be my obvious next step. I have never seen temps like that before unless the heatsink looked like a furry critter. Well, for stock speeds anyways.

I'll concur that you need to reapply thermal paste (cleaning off the old first with some isopropyl alcohol and a Q-tip, of course.).

My 3500 runs at 32-35 idle stock clock and stock Heatsink/Fan. I don't leave arctic silver on for much more than a year before reapplying.

Some new findings, If you look here at the fan RPM range is 1350-2600rpm. SpeedFan and Smartguardian both show the CPU fan RPM at roughly 1200rpm even when running Prime95's small FFT test. the REALLY weird thing is the temp does NOT go up, i repeat does NOT go up when running Prime95. It goes DOWN, yes DOWN. by so much as 3 degrees sometimes. I know you think this isnt possible but i shit you not. ... help?
