920 cpu upgrade

I currently have an Athlon 64 3000+ s754, 512mb ddr ram, Abit KV8 Pro, ATI x850xt agp and an Enermax CoolerGiant 380w.

If I plan to overclocked, would it be a good upgrade to get a pentium D 920 ? I was planning to upgrade next year to the AMD am2 socket but now I really don't know what to do.

The 9xx series overclocks like mad. With watercooling they go 2.8 -> 4.2 at stock voltage! Do it man :cool:
 
And if I go with air cooling how much can it go ? Like a Zalman 9500 ?

you can keep your ram and x850xt agp if you get an asus p5p800 se...you might need to borrow an older lga775 chip to update to the supporting bios. that board with a 920D should be a potent low cost upgrade...and overclock like mad :D

zalman coolers are never the highest performing coolers...get a thermalright xp-90 or si-120 if you want to run a larger fan...

thermalright has been proven to make the best performing/low noise coolers...

for $25 bucks the xp-90 is a steal...even with a low speed 92mm fan it will provide a C/W rating of less than .2 and that is with less than 30 dBA of noise.

the si-120 will provide slightly better performance, will be a tiny bit quieter (almost unnoticeable to the common person), but costs about twice as much...the decision is yours, but thermalright is your ticket to stardom with aircooling...just don't forget the lga775 adapter which will be about 5 bucks..

If the board has the "asus ez flash" feature he may not need to borrow any chips at all. I've heard similar stories of people in this same situation (not with this exact hardware but with Asus mobo and an older bios they have to flash for CPU support). They report it saying "unsupported processor found, please contact your vendor", but it posts far enough though to use the ez flash utillity and get you going within 5-10min.
 
I'd assume you're OC'd now. I'd just keep what you have and wait and see what happens. Nothing out there now is going to be head and shoulders above what you're running (well, without putting down a lot of cash), plus by waiting maybe 2-3 months you'll have a better outlook on what's coming.
 
for air-cooling, almost nothing beats a TT Big Typhoon. They are better than the XP series, and this is coming from an XP-90 owner, and I love my XP-90, so I'm not saying it out of spite. The big typhoon handles higher heat loads better than anything out there, which is something you'll need for an Intel dual core.

Yes I will try overclocking as soon as my system is up. That's what I wanted to know if it was worth to upgrade based on the cpu alone. All the people posting about their overclocking show their results on 3dMark05, but I don't play 3dMark05 I play games.
 
i got the Si-120 for my 920. havent been able to get good contact with the core though so for now, i have the stock HSF in there. with the SI-120, i kept getting 80-90C and cpu fan errors. with stock HSF, its inthe low 50s. not great but do-able for now while i get stuff set up. ill give the SI-120 another try sometime soon. installing HSF is the part i hate when putting computers together lol

where are reviews of it overclocking like mad? the reviews on newegg as not very encouraging.

And that's why you should always cover then entire core/IHS w/a thin layer of thermal compound. What kind of 'enthusiast' wouldn't know that?

wow, never mind. The reviews at newegg did not cover overclocking so i wasn't sure. Looks like a good board. I'm waiting for Conroe to see if should upgrade this year or next. It's essentially the differece between two cores and four cores.

Are you sure the p5p800 se can handle the 9xx CPU's? I have a p5p800 and it has the same chipset and it can only handle up to the 6xx series. It would be awesome if that board works because my p5p800 is an awesome overclocker and it was fairly inexpensive. I'm currently running my p4 630 @ 3.5Ghz and its stability is rock solid.

It depends on which revision you have. Apparently, companies had to modify the chipset before it would work.
