My aunt is thinking of getting a new computer from her 20MHZ old one, she wants pretty much new everything. Anyone up to the challenge of configuring one with an LCD moniter, new key board, new mouse, etc, for home use and maybe some gaming.
 
for that price, it;ll probably be cheaper to get a dell for everything you want.

Doesn't include tax or shipping that's ahy there is the $100 shortage. Its probably not the best setup and people will probably be able to suggest better stuff for comparable amounts of money but I think it'll at least show approximately what can be had for that amount. Also, I tried to use brand names that I have heard were reliable hence the $300 Sony LCD instead of say a $200 [insert generic brand here] LCD, or the Pqi memory as opposed to the [insert geeneric brand here] memory, so you can probably cut the costs on alot of stuff here.

Agreed. LCD's can get very expensive and blow away $500 of your budget. Sometimes Dell has offers for free 15" LCD monitors.
 
If not going with Dell, I think meatycheesyboy did pretty well ...

I'd get this power supply instead though: Fortron FSP300-60PN ... It'd be quieter than the Antec 300W. Newegg says it only has 15A on the +12V. The sticker on my brother's FSP300 says 18A.

Go for a rebate deal hard drive at local B&M if you want to get more storage.

And he forgot Windows XP ;) ... I wouldn't install a pirated version in your Aunt's PC. Adding a WinXP Home OEM disc might put you over $900 though ...

Don't forget OpenOffice if she's only doing Word Processing. For a free program, it's pretty darn good.

This a combination of components in my HTPC and a build I just did for a friend. A bit less processor and memory than earlier suggestions, but includes a beautiful 19" LCD, more storage and an OS. This cominbination of the Seasonic PS, Whisperrock, and passive northbridge cooling will make this machine inaudible from 2 feet away or less which should appeal to your aunt. Swap the 80mm fan in the Whisperrock with a Panaflow L1A (Japan) and you won't hear anything at all with the case panels on.

Add another 256mb to take better advantage of the nForce2 controller. A very easy build, no add in cards. Let's face it, if your aunt gets into gaming she'll want a better video card than a $900 budget will allow. Let her upgrade if it's worth it. I'm betting the onboard video will do fine.
