I'm having a hard time picking up a mobo in my price range. Sort of down to Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 and Asrock Extreme3 Gen3.

I won't be doing SLI/CF right away but plan to in the future perhaps. The GB board can only do 4x/4x if used in dual cards and the Asrock can do 8x/8x. The Asrock comes out $35 more expensive (not much, but I'm frugal).

It seems from what I read 8x/8x doesn't have much impact on performance vs true 16x/16x (is this true?) but can't find any info on 4x/4x. Will I lose a lot?

I personally think you would notice a difference with 4x. But I am not sure. I would spring for the 8x/8x and call it a day :)

Yeh if your using dual GPU's that are more powerfull than say 6770's then 4x will be a bottleneck.

8x isnt a bottleneck for any cards atm apart from two 7970/680's overclocked and even then it only just bottlenecks
