8pin pci-e connector

Since my PSU only has the older 6 pin connectors, would using an 8 pin adapter work just as good as actually having a psu with an 8 pin pci e connector?

Do you happen to have a modular PSU? It's entirely possible that if you do you can get one shipped to you from the manufacturer.

Seasonic sent two for free (they even paid for shipping) - All I had to do was email them. I recieved the 6pin+2pins from them for my 600w Seasonic M12.

The extra 2 pins on an 8-pin are just ground sense pins, and most power supplies route them to combine with the normal grounds anyway making no electrical difference from a 6-pin. I'm going to use a six-to-eight-pin adapter as a permanent thing with my GTX 280, personally, alongside one normal six-pin connector for the six-pin molex.

yeah I do have a modular PSU. I may give that a try. In the mean time if the 8 pin adapter works as well as that dude claims, then it doesn't bother me to use an adapter. Maybe I'll just sleeve the adapter so it doesn't look so ugly lol.

bah, I contacted ULTRA customer support, and they wont give me one for free... nor do they even sell it individually.

Yup, both the 9800GX2 and GTX 280s should come with adapters.

Oh that is good news. I just sent them an email to see if they can help me out also with my M12 700.

Yup, both the 9800GX2 and GTX 280s should come with adapters.

Last I heard there was no 6 pin to 8 pin adapter with EVGA's 9800GX2 (though I think most others do include it).

Those adapters in the picture are 8 pin to 6 pin (8 pin from PSU to 6 pin to graphics card) and the 8 pin to 8 pin adapter (because the clip is in an odd place on some 8 pin connectors, so this adapter fixes that). But the much needed 6 pin to 8 pin adapter (from power supply to card) wasn't included.

EVGA 9800GX2 owners made such a stink about it, that EVGA decided to include them with the GTX 280. However they put a huge ominous warning in with the adapter stating it's for temporary use only and the world will end if you use it too long.

EVGA GTX 280 = Does Come with an 8 pin adapter

man, that is so dumb. Has anyone reported any negative effects while using the adapter? What really sucks is none of the local computer shops around here have the adapters and they try to force you to buy a new PSU that already has the 8pin connector. All the online stores that do have the adapter charge 10 bucks + they want another $10-15 for slow poke mail. That's ridiculous. hmm darn.

If I were to make my own from my 6pin connector, how would I go about doing this?
