8ms Viewsonic from the Egg

Reading the reviews on newegg, some are saying that its a 16ms panel. I looked it up on viewsonic site and its listed as 8ms... but I also found a review done by Inside Mac Games listing it as having 16ms... So I'm confused. :confused:

Viewsonic has replaced both the 17" and the 19" models (VP171 and VP191) with newer versions. The model is the same, but they claim for better refresh rate.

The new VP191 is 16ms instead of 25ms, while the VP171 is 8ms instead of 16ms.

I contacted the VS support group and they told me the newer models use a new panel.

Search back in the forum history for a post made by me regarding this issue.

I still am not sure why VS has chosen such a weird move. Why not simply release a new model name for the new panels? This causes a lot of confusion...
 
If I read correctly, somewhere, I believe it was Tom's, talked about how Viewsonic has a 'best' refresh rate of 8ms. It only works certain color changes, otherwise it is still at 16ms.

All LCD monitors are like that. The rated value is just the best case scenario. That's why there is not that much difference between 16ms and 8ms panels as all those fast panels are optimized for quick black-to-white transitions (which is the only thing that "counts").
 
BTW, I received this monitor from newegg and it is superb. Really crisp and clear text and graphics. I like it a lot.
 
also pop in any fps game like doom3, counterstrike if possible and whip around in circles for a bit as fast as you can.. let us know if it blurs or ghosts. :cool:

Hi, do anyone know which is the new panel? is it an TN, S-IPS,xVA?
The VP191s/b, always mounted an PVA, It would be nice that they mounted the newer version from samsung, that claims 8ms!!

Found a review of it for you... however, did some more digging, because in the review nor on Viewsonic's site does it mention the panel type, or even give a clue by listing colour depth etc... So, I went to the site with the link I posted in this forum, and found out that it was a TN panel manufactured by AUO (which generally means it's a 6-bit panel). Damn.

You are correct. AND you are wrong :D

They updated the monitor January 2005. So your "last summer" monitor had the old specs.

Old = 25ms repsonse, 400:1 contrast

New = 16ms response, 700:1 contrast

The 8ms is the GRAY-TO-GRAY spec.

What is nice about the VP191 is that it is true 8bit. The VP912 is "6+2" (6bit + dithering).
and the VP191 is HD capable. All said, the updated 2005 model looks like a nice gaming/video solution. Think I will get one and try it out.

Perhaps the "updated model" of the 191 now no longer uses a PVA matrix, if it's a "low reponse time" monitor, as it would make it more likely a TN panel. (i.e 6 bit)
 
Nope.

ViewSonic support has confirmed to me that it is an MVA panel.
The only way to tell if you're getting the newest 8ms or the previous 16ms is by a sticker on the box.
 
The Viewsonic VP191 is pretty expensive compared to the competition. I would suggest the Hyundai L90D+ or Samsung 915N instead for a 19" gaming LCD. If your wanting a true 8-bit panel then i would suggest spending a little more and getting a Dell 2001FP or 2005FPW when their on sale. I got the 2005FPW for only $486 + tax the other night.
 
I love my Vp171b. Great monitor overall. I am going to buy a VP201b just because of the experience with the smaller LCD.
