I posted this on another forum but does anyone know when this monitor should reach the internet resellers? Viewsonic issued a press release after CES and said it would be released in February.

The VP191b achieves an improved ClearMotiv 8ms gray-to-gray video response time using ViewSonic’s Amplified Impulse technology that provides smoother, faster image transitions. Since the majority of video transitions on games and digital entertainment are gray-to-gray, an increased gray scale response time produces superior front-of-screen performance for motion video. The display offers the same exceptional clarity and vibrant images that customers have come to expect with its 1280x1024 native resolution, higher 800:1 (typ) contrast ratio and OptiSync® dual input technology that supports digital (DVI) and two analog (VGA) signals. The improved VP191b will be available in February through authorized ViewSonic resellers, distributors and mail order outlets for an estimated street price (ESP) of $549.

Cnet also has a video on the monitor. Anyone see it around yet?

it'll show up in the channel sooner or later...

usually, Viewsonic adds a "-2" to the end of revision models.

No, but it'd be nice if they would have given it a new name.
There's already two versions of this monitor out there.

no to what?

i'm not seeing a relist of the model # via my distribs (and hell, i'm a viewsonic reseller, so...)

in any case, i've confirmed that Viewsonic will be doing the "stealth" replacement: feeding existing stock out and replacing with 8ms models. no model # designation.

No, I haven't seen it around yet.

Actually I'm kind of confused on this. Some sites have a 16ms VP191 which started showing up last month. Viewsonics specs still list a 16ms model. Then there's the older 25ms version that some sites still sell, now there's this one with 8ms grey to grey.

I noticed benq also has similar overdrive technology and now most lcd makers are harping on about how their grey to grey is now fantastic, I'm glad to see the whole industry is on the ball with grey to grey improvements, sorely need for lcd to match crt in ghosting imo.

but remember, grey-to-grey is just one part of the panel response time. an 8ms grey-to-grey prolly averages the panel to 12ms or therabouts.

i'll do some more digging.

I know, but what could make this big is the fact that this is an MVA panel, or at least the VP191 used to be, and the current specs seem in line with an MVA panel. IIRC grey to grey was the downfall of MVA panels. Hopefully we can get comparable to the response time of a 12-16ms TN LCD with the advantages of an MVA panel. I hope this isn't just a bunch of marketing bs.

Ummmm.....careful everyone.

These companies are loose with all these specs.

The 8ms monitor is already here. You can get it at Newegg, etc.

As someone mentioned, the 8ms spec is GRAY-TO-GRAY. But lookie at the pdf file on the Viewsonic website and you will see an 8ms logo PROMINENTLY placed on page one. You have to read the spec details to get the gray-to-gray info. Note that it say 20ms typical! Now go to the main products page and notice there they say 16ms typical. All the retailers are listing it as 16ms typical as well. Hmmmmm. An 8ms that is 20ms that is 16ms. Marketing majors have to earn their keep I guess.

That all said, this looks like a great LCD. So much so I just bought one after reading all this stuff. Really.

Looks like the scoop is this: Prior to 2005 the VP191b was 25ms and 400:1 contrast. They just came out with an updated spec in January 2005 and now it is 16ms with 700:1 contrast. It also is HD capable AND it is TRUE 8bit! Unlike the VP912 that is "6+2" (ie 6bit plus dithering).

www.viewsonic.com has the pdf with all the details (you don't have to link to the koalas in Aussie to find this stuff):

http://www.viewsonic.com/pdf/VP191b_DS_lo_1204.pdf

So bottom line, when you read all the lukewarm online reviews for the VP191b, keep in mind that if they are prior to Feb 2005 they are the older 25ms, 400:1 contrast model. This updated 2005 model looks like a nice compromise gaming/video solution at decent price ($477 shipped).

Woof!

Dave Graham,
does Viewsonic plan to mfg a fast-cheap 23/24" LCD to compete with the 16ms 23" HP-L2335 and 24" Dell-2405FPW ?
All Viewsonic seems to have now is that old slow 23" Dog they've been selling past couple years for a ridiculous $2K.

It's hard to know for sure. This 8ms grey to grey monitor also states a different contrast ratio and different viewing angles.

they have the new VP231w which is a widescreen 23" panel...it's looking like it'll list for around 1699.00 retail and 1550.00 street. i'll know more when they actually start showing up. i'm guessing mid-to-late march at this point.

I don't see the different viewing angle? Both sites have it as 170 degree? Notice that the pdf in the link I posted prominenty refers to the monitor as 8ms with 170 degree Xtremeview. It later says 160 degree (must be a typo...) and 20ms. But notice after the response and contrast they use the nice little subjective reference of "typical" (=typ). This confusion is all the result of inconsistent marketing material. The common link between these "new 2005" models is the 8ms gray.

I did a search on the anandtech forums when I was researching the monitor and someone there has posted some emails from viewsonic confirming the specs and other questions. The info there may be off some help.

Good deal then. When you get your monitor could you respond how it is for gaming?

I'm probably going to be replacing my old 1800fp soon (giving it to the parents), and I don't want something that is worse than what I already have. Gaming isn't my main concern, and I can deal with a decent amount of streaking, since I'm used to a 30ms monitor.

I just bought a vp191, how am i suppose to know which model i have? on the back of the screen it says VLCDS25973-2W , can anyone confirm that this is the 16ms version of the vp191? I have a feeling the company i bought this from sent me a 25ms model even though they listed the specs as 16ms

Anyone know a definitive source to buy one of these? This could be THE LCD I've been waiting so long for although a previous viewsonic CRT of mine left a sour taste in my mouth and them trying to phase out the old crappy monitors along side of introducing this new one by not changing the model number doesn't earn any points for me either...

Yes I am too very interested. Anyone actually get one of these "8-16MS" versions and see if it is indeed that much better than the old 25MS version?

And does anyone know how to make sure you got the faster version?

i sell 'em but am rather indisposed at the moment. Newegg or Monitors Direct usually will have a good selection.

pretty much a "buy and return" game unless you've got a company that's willing to sort through thousands of dollars of stock to pick your panel. i'd do that, but since i ship direct from the distrib, you're outta luck.

MOST companies will NOT do this.
