8gb vs 16gb

I have the rig in my sig. But it doesn't like to oc with all 4 sticks. I'm doing some gaming. Starting to encode my sons movies to h264 from blu ray for playback off external HHS on his tv.

So do I need the 16gb. Will it help me at all?

I have 3 options IMO. Run my DDR1333 at 1.75v (what auto wants to stabilize at 4.2) any higher than 4.2, 1.65 doesn't seem to cut it in ITB. I tried loosening to 10-10-10-27

Drop down to 2 sticks, 8gb, sell 2 sticks

Upgrade to 2x8gb for $100 and sell the 4x4gb.

Not sure what else to go with

No, not really unless you do a lot of VMs or something.

But you shouldn't need to change the DDR voltage to get the CPU to overclock, since you aren't changing the DDR speed with multiplier only overclocking. If you want to try upping a voltage for overclocking, change VCCSA and VCCIO instead, as they are related to the integrated memory controller - but even that is almost never necessary for overclocks as low as 4.2. Either you have RAM issues of some other sort, or your overclock isn't stable for old-fashioned reasons, like lack of Vcore.

And whatever you do, don't run your RAM at 1.75V with a Sandy Bridge. 1.65V is the safe maximum (and even that is debated).

The machine auto bumps the DDR volts to 1.75, I have been told that with SB and all four slots occupied it needs a bump to maintain stable speeds. It will run with 2 sticks at 1.5 just fine. My ram has passed overnight IBT, and 30 passes of Memtest86+. But once I try and run all 4 it wants a bump, which stock it runs at 1.65V, but once I hit 4.2 it wants more, or I get BSOD 1A. Which is memory management. And some say that may be Vcore, but even if I run 1.4, or 1.425 at 4.2 it kicks out. So lack of Vcore isnt an issue. I can try 1.3, 1.35, 1.38, 1.4 etc dont matter. MSI forums is pointing to 4 sticks of ram in thier Z68 boards. Id love to run at 1.5, or 1.35 (if I got diff ram)

Do you think 8GB will be fine for what I do. Litterally, I built this rig to play skyrim (well company laptop died, so I needed something anyway). I will if I get time play metro 2033, and the crysis. I would also like to play both witchers, but again, time is so damn tight, I doubt ill get to play half of that. So some gaming, and some excell. The wife does Facebook.

I'm running all four slots @1.5V.

I really think my mobo is a little on the crap side.

My brother's setup is using the same board, 4x4gb of corsair vengance @ 1.502 with cpu @ 4.7 without any issues.. i'd say it's prob your ram and not your mobo.

Given the cheap coast of ram these days, i'd go for 2x8gb if you wanna stick with 16gb.

hey where did you find 2x8gb?? i have 4x2 corsair ram and it cost me $199 :S

I'd suggest you swap our your MoBo. I'm running my i7 at 4.7Ghz with 4x4Gb of ram, and my ram voltage is sitting just fine at defaults. As far as I know RAM voltages shouldn't affect your CPU OC. Maybe go for the ASUS p8z68 boards.
