What brand was it? AFAIK, it's not a WD or Hitachi, as they also have legacy Molexes, and I don't think Samsungs have a jumper block on them. That leaves Maxtor or Seagate most likely.

This event wasn't the drives fault, but I'm kind of curious about what brand of drive this occured on. I guess you redefined hot plugging :D
 
WTF? You mean if I don't plug the SATA power in correctly that is what will happen :confused:
 
judging by the shape of the top on the HD (the littel i can see) it is infact a seagate... and from the discription , it wasnt so much as loose as it wasnt hooked up right all together... (or there was something else wrong) i have shorted many connections and have never seen the type of violence that that would have created... if it where infact the power side of things it should have hit the short over load protection in the psu, and it clearly didnt, meaning it was somhow plugged into the the wrong slots... (mostlikely power to data ) and it smoked the PCB (and parts of it along with it)

Reminds me of the time I was working on a customer's POS (NOT "point-of-sale" :p) rig...

When I powered it on, the Quantum Fireball's logic chip on the bottom POPPED and spat burning plastic and silicon all over the bottom of the drive tray. I was impressed!

Anyone else seen that happen before?

I don't think your analysis is correct.

We expect our power supplies to deliver 20 to 30 amps on some lines. If a supply with such a rating shut down before delivering that current, we'd be disappointed because a load that took such current by-design would end up triggering the overload protection in the power supply and shut things down.

Wire has intrinsic resistance, so even a short circuit across three feet of 22 AWG power supply wire ends up having some measurable resistance. Connectors have resistance, too.

I figure what happened here was that the SATA power connector was on loose, and the close tolerance of the connector caused a supply pin to short to a ground pin through the contact trace on the PC board.

The resistance of this "short circuit" is the sum of the resistances in the wire from the power supply, the connector crimp, the connector pin, the trace on the PC board, the other connector pin, and the return wire to the power supply. That adds up quickly, even though it is still a very small number.

For a 12-volt line, 30 amps is drawn by a load of only 0.4 ohms. That's 360 watts, and certainly enough current to generate a great deal of heat when applied to a conductor that isn't up to the task of carrying so much current.

I saw that happen with a 18 gig SCSI... I literaly saw a small plasma arc leap out of one hole in the logic chip and into another hole, I got a good look because the drive was in a removeable cage that I had pulled out to install the drive and left out while I started up the system. I kinda sat there stunned for a sec and was thinking "Cool, I wish I had my camera going". Then as the big IC chip was poping and cracking and arc welding itself to death and I'm surprised that this was even possible another chip suddenly pops and fires a blob of something glowing up in the air (I've flipped the drive over by now for a good look at this "event") I then ripped out the molex plug before it started a problem with other devices in my system. I then looked up and noticed quite the white cloud had developed. Phew what a stink. You can see a couple of tiny "blast" holes through these chips now.

If I hadn't got the drive for only $20 I would have been pissed, swapped the controller board from a drive I had with bad sectors and it worked great after that.
